Hi All:

I just purchased a Porsche tire inflator purported to be appropriate for a 928. When I went to store it within the spare tire area with jack, I found they both won't fit together. When I looked at the manual, it appears the original (missing) unit was much smaller....

Guess they come in different sizes and size does matter huh??......

Hi John-

Hard to say without a picture. However, many people have experienced that the original Porsche inflator doesn't work too well. The hose has a tendency to break/come off under pressure since it's 15+ years old. If you're looking for functionality, Harbor Freight sells a small pump that will fit for about $12-$15. If you want concourse, do your research and found out the right pump for your car. Hope this helps.

As Andrew said - hard to tell without a picture.
As far as I know there have been two types of pumps for the 928. One was a creme colored rectangular box that came with the early cars (78-82 possibly). The second is a square black box 11"x11"x4" with the word Porsche on the top. I have these in my 84,87,89 & 93. I have seen then in every car of the years in between.
Andrew is spot on about functuality. On two occasions when I have had a flat the pumps, one of each type, have failed on me.
A picture or description could help further to know what you have.

Thanks guys. Roger it is of the latter black type you describe (sorry no pic but is of the typical type you see for sale on Ebay). The one I bought l believe is absolutely unused. As for funtionality, I agree-I was just trying to get original type in there (analogous to the generally worthless Porsche tools in the kit -but I wanted to have them).
Anyway, none of the previous two cars I've had came with them so I wasn't sure of the fit, but when I looked at the owner's manual drawing, it depicts the thing occupying about one side within the spare wheel and the jack is lying on the other. This thing I have (without jack in there) JUST fits in with essentially each corner touching the inside of the spare wheel.

It fits inside the spare wheel along with the sheet for lying on the ground, the bag for the wheel you take off the car, the plastic gloves and spare belts.
Your jack fits behind the tool cover.

Jack does not belong in the spare wheel, it fits behind the tool panel and yes original POS pump was tuny

I have the POS original black inflator for looks. I wouldn't dream of ever using it. I also wouldn't ever dream of using my 16 YO space saver spare tire. Call AAA or trailer it myself.

Yes you have to figure out how to get the jack behind the tool panel. With a full set of tools in place it is possible to get the jack and the lug wrench to fit... I made a soft fabric cover for my lug wrench so it wouldn't rattle.

Well, this is something I wasn't aware of. I just tried a different spot for the lug wrench, but neither that nor the jack are behind the panel, I'll give that a shot tonight.

Lug wrench comes at a downward angle on the front-side of the spare with the long part sloping down and leftward.. There is a special little angled spot for it.

H - This doesn't work with a 17" spare - there is no room anywhere for the handle. Fits fine behind the tool panel - you just have to figure out how...

I just had it between the foam and the the carpet for awhile, and just recently moved it like that, there indeed an angled spot, but it doesn't seem all that secure. I think Alan has the right idea.
