Hey Jerry, if you are thinking of doing a run of these, I am interested. I would send it to my buddy in Texas, and pick it up later, from him.
Cheers.

Hi Don, That is an interesting question because on the way home from the office at noon today that same thought occured to me. Why not make a half dozen or so of these just for the good of the group? I have been working on the design in my mind for my own version of these. I find that Carl's version is very sturdy and well designed, but it lacks any style in the design. I am putting some style into it and keeping what he has put into it for strength and will now look into having my out-of-shop machinist mill me some CNC end pieces for these and then maybe work up a few.

I love this idea, Jerry! Frankly, I had not thought of any styling, other than liking the one someone made that had holes all along it (looking for picture...). The one functional design element I had considered is driven by my 928 being a US 86.5 with the tight squeeze for my (non-stock) intake tubes where the side plenums sit near the engine cross bar. Let me think about this. I was wanting this for when my motor comes back together in the next week or so, but maybe I can make due with the stock cross bar until we put something together.

Thank you PC. I did not know about them being available through Amazon. I did find some on the 928 Motorsports site, Pelican, and on eBay. The eBay ad says the seller (928 Motorsports) is away until April 30, which is longer than I wanted to wait.

Carlos, the original cross bar sits about an eighth of an inch or slightly more below the mounting plane at the ends. I have worked up a design for the ends to match the original position of the bar, but with my design I can raise the bar (tube) about level with the mounting tabs. Otherwise I will need to make a new design and work with different material than my current design calls for. Here is my design as sketched out.

In fact, Carlos, if I go to inch and a half bar stock for the ends I can put the cross bar/tube about 5/8 of an inch above the original position. Let me know how much you would like.

Jerry,

I too might have interest in a new bar - appearance would be key as to whether I felt it was an appearance AND performance upgrade.

Carlos, I have ordered the material to make two of these braces. One I plan to make in the same dimensions as the original, but the other one, probably for you, can be made for the brace bar/tube to be anywhere from the lowest location of the original up to about 5/8 of an inch higher. It also occurs to me that I can also make the brace to have the bar/tube cross the bay at anywhere from about 3/4 inch or even 7/8 inch forward of the original position to that much aft of the original position, depending perhaps solely on how one might like it to appear in relation to what is under it.

I'm awaiting your guidance about where you want or need the bar/tube.

It might even be cool if one could even just order one of these at all. I am a long ways from that at this point.

Right now I have a bit of material to make two of these depending on the configuration that Carlos needs and one for me in the design I have posted above.

Here is a picture of the material I have now obtained.

This is going t be a lot like scuplting an elephant. To do that one must get a large stone and then chip away everything that does not look like an elephant. Here I will need to mill away everything that does not look like the end pieces that I have and will have designed. Simple as that.

Is the limit on the forward displacement (3/4 to max of 7/8 of an inch) the oil filler neck?

Good guess and good data point! I had not even noticed the side holes on that cross bar! (picture, below)

Jerry, I found the cross bar where I had seen the holes - it is the Kremer bar found on the Unicorn 928 GTE (pic below). However, what I had in mind, style-wise, is a combination of the Kremer bar and another custom bar (also pictured, below) which spans the width of the mounting point. I will probably relax the constraint of addressing the S3 pinch area for several reasons:

1) The engine bay mount brackets for the cross bar are largely responsible for creating that pinch area.
2) I plan to augment the pre-filter breathing by eventually opening up the rear air box itself a little.
3) last and least: it would pose significant design challenges.

I will try to draw up my design this weekend. Meanwhile, here are some good reference pictures:

^^^^^ full mount width cross bar ^^^^^

^^^^^ vandalized 86.5 cross bar (side holes) ^^^^^

^^^^^ cool looking STRUT (probably?) bar ^^^^^

S3 Pinch Area examples - my intake tubes are non-stock, so they do not have the neck-down of the stock tubes which fit in the S3 pinch area as shown in these pictures:
