Default MORE PICS: 928 TurboSport Production kit installed: a few pictures...

I only had time to snip a few pictures, & still have to make some changes to my cat-pipe & such, but at least people can now see what the production kit looks like under the car (disregard zip-tie on 2nd picture: I use one to stablize my pipes while I set them for anti-vibration tighten everything up.

I'll have final pictures of the entire kit, installed & video of it running, come wednesday. Hopefully I'll have all this on my site as well soon.

Send me an email, not a PM or if you really have a question & not just a snotty comment (wink), email me. The next few weeks will not allow me the liberty to cruise this forum (or any other), but I always get to my emails...).

1st picture: 4.5" j-pipe transition with re-used Silicone coupler: disregard
2nd picture: Right stainless collector & aluminum charged air pipe
3nd picture: a neat view of the mirror-polished stainless steel Y-pipe
4rd picture: installed & running kit
4th picture: turbo assembly being squared & balanced as it's installed.

Mark
Will the turbo clear an automatics torque convertor? Looks like it might be tight on an auto?

Not sure on the Auto's. I figure I'll have to reconfig. the kit for them. So until I verify that it won't fit, this is a 5-speed kit for now. I will have the Auto's needs addressed in short time.

Abby: my welder got sick, so couldn't run the muffler, so I tacked up a dump past the turbo: wow. sounds generic @ idle, but at 2k it's nice & @ 3k, it's exotic + the turbo whine in/out of boost: incredible. I"ll probably make a quick video for you later tonight if I get home from work in time.

how low does the turbo hang? looks very low, also what about the heat being so close to TT do you think that may become a problem?

Bottom of Turbo hangs about 2" higher than the oil pan (on a level 928). There's a little more heat @ idle because of the absence of the heatshields, but once you're rolling, all the heat is gone since the entire turbo path is in the air stream under the car, with the exception of the air filter which receives air via turbulence in the rear (cool).

The torque tube is long & steel: transmits heat slowly & gains heat slowly as well as most of the heat is out the rear of the car when traveling. Also, the hottest part of the TT would be close to the Transaxle, where your 5 quarts of trans fluid + the aluminum casing of the transaxle absorb the heat to be disappated by the air stream as well. It's surprisingly cool under car after running it. You can feel the radiant heat from the exhaust/turbo, but the surrounding areas are cool enough to touch bare-handed & w/o feeling any heat build-up.

mark (back to work).

A temperature probe taped to the cabin-side of the trans tunnel showed 3 degree increase after driving for 10m from previous test (ac on in car both times).

I echo jyoon's question about the oil inlet line and the oil scavenging back to the oil pan. Or is there going to be a seperate oiling system with cooler for the turbo? I give you a for your efforts. Beautiful looking kit and I like the space to work on it as well.

Very nice job Mark. As much as I would like to see you be able to make similar kit for automatics I'd say it is virtually impossible. Space that you are utilizing is filled with torque converter and other gearbox parts. Kit for automatics would need to fit almost totally into area where stock exhaust is normally. Porsche didn't leave space you are now using there just for fun. They put all of it into good use in one version or other.

Only if you upgrade to a ball-bearing unit, I think.

And yes, there will be a seperate Mo-cal oil cooling unit at the rear of the car if you do..

I have never seen a turbo without an oil line. The H2O cooling lines will be needed for the ball bearing turbo's but there needs to be some oil lines there regardless.

How large will this oil cooler be?

There likely is an oil line, I was only talking about an oil cooler.

Not sure how large it is... It's a Mo-cal and I think he said it uses about 4-6 quarts in the system.

It's not an original part of the kit so many of the details in regards to the cooler are being ironed out.

what are the blue tubes on the intake side. blow off valve stuff?
any pics of where the filter sits?
any chance of the pressurized side adapter couplings blowing off due to the pressure? I remember Tilo's supercharged beast would blow off the main intake line, until he put a lip on the pipe.

any concerns of back pressure with the turbo? (as far as burning valves)?

very very cool!!

MK
