airosey, you have the option to do what you wish. I'm sure it will be fine either way. My initial post was just a seat of the pants comment in response to your question. It's unfortunate that I have to justify the obvious when it was JUST a comment. In retrospect, I think you dealt with it exactly the way it should have been dealt with...for what's it's worth and moved on. Good for you. Unfortunately, there are others who get riled up and it can be seen time after time on this board. It's too bad, because they deter other members from posting as they fear they will be attacked due to their own comments or questions.

Wade, I agree. Many guys have increased power/speed, but what have they done about adding braking or safety? I'm certainly not the safety police and I don't proclaim to drive that way. I will make a statement though when I see fit. Thanks for doing your best to smooth out a situation that wasn't supposed to be a situation

This thing has taken way too much of my time and once again, I got sucked into the ridiculous vortex of Rennlist Rednecking. It's no surprise that many of the key folks in the 928 community have lost interest in the 928 Forum.

Wade: Yes, speed is a contributing factor in all accidents. If there was no speed, there would be no accidents. But I'm not advocating absolute safety.

Sure, a 928 with extra power, driven irresponsibly can get into an accident easily. But it doesn't have to - it's up to the driver's actions.

However, this is a totally different issue. Any time, soneome ELSE can run a red light or stop sign, veer off his/her lane, etc. and cause a colission. That's somethig neither you, nor I nor airosey can control. What we can control is how we are protected in such incidents.

And in that sense I am glad to hear airosey has opted to put the cover on. Not because this cover will provide perfect safety, but because it's at least a step in the right direction. Besides, it does llook more refined, or more apporpriate for a 928...

Airbags have paralyzed nearly as many people (and killed a few) as they've saved as of the late 90s. There are 10s of millions out there and it took over 10 years for their proponents (who probably distorted the facts) to claim that they saved 10,000 lives. I have known 2 people who are now quadraplegics because airbags went off at low speeds when they weren't supposed to, and I heard a couple weeks ago that one is now in a coma because he nearly drown in his own saliva. I had an airbag go off slicing my nose open and leaving me with chemical burns on my face, arms, chest, and legs... $4248 to replace the airbag and associated equipment, $0 to repair the non-existant damage to the car caused by the non-existant crash. (I still have the airbag in a box in the garage.)

In response to Nicole, even with a seat belt on tight you will move forward several inches. Like I said originally, if your head or face hits the hub, you have a more serious problem that actually hitting the hub.

How often do you sit just a few inches from the steering wheel? I stated there is some elasticity in the belt, which is there to decelerate you more softly. And if you are on a well designed seat, you will not "submarine" under the belt. The colission must be at unbelievable speeds or against a very rigid object for someone properly buckled up to hit the hub with their upper body. In those extreme cases, the whole point of whether this wheel is save might be moot. But such cases are extremely rare.

In what car did you have the airbag go off by accident?

Chris,
I like your wheel better with the cover on anyway. Like you said it is more finished and refined and more in keeping with the (stock) interior of the 928.

BTW Chris,
You better keep your dental records in your sock drawer if you don't use the cover.

Nice wheel, I have the same exact one in my '85.

Thanks guys! It does look much better with the cover on. Not as nice as some of the momo's and the 930. But my stock wheel was showing its time, and this one was free. It has such a nicer feel than the stock wheel also, the gripping is more cushioned, and the wheel is also a couple inches farther back towards the pod. I guess that could make it less likely for me to hit. The shorter hub makes it much easier to operate the turnsignal and wipers.
Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Mel! It's no hurry for the pics. I'm sure you took some really nice ones with that camera! Just let me know when you need my address. Hey, you could just burn ALL of your 928 pics to a DVD haha! You may have to email me a couple to satisfy my cravings LOL.

Thanks Imo000, does your horn work? Can't get mine to work, I haven't check to make sure there is contact behind the wheel. I'm still searching for a new horn button with the porsche crest. Do you know if the momo horn button will work?

Thanks,
Chris

Of Course, some might think from this pic that Chris had more serious threats to keeping his pearly whites in his head!! But I can attest to the fact that this guy is a freakin Mountain Goat at how he scaled Grandfather Mtn. in just his flip flops!!!!

Thumbs up

Well...I was going to come in here with the ol' shotgun to blast a hole in this dead horse. But, I don't really care. It's Chris' face after all.

I think the wheel looks better with the pad on.

Nicole/Keith, I blame Chris. If he had just put the pad on in the first place, none of this would have come up.

Look what you did, Chris! WTF! Nicole and Keith have been having to vigorously defend their views on wanting to protect you. Why? All because you thought you liked it without the pad. And you were wrong. Now, you like it with the pad. Did it ever occur to you that the pad was included for a reason? Because it will protect you AND it looks better. Jeez, got everyone all riled up for nothing. Way to go, Chris!

Chris,

I will go against the grain and say that I actually prefer the steering wheel without the cover. On my '89 I have a MOMO Fighter steering wheel that looks and feels great. On the '90 of course, it came with the airbag wheel (which I actually think gives it a more modern look).

I think that I am the only one who does not like the look of the 930 wheel. I prefer the MOMO (and Dino) over it.

You are correct Matt about airbags injuring and even paralyzing people. Yes they can save lives but they also can maim or decapitate. If I had a 1990's 928 I would be scared to death of those airbags going off in a relatively minor accident and severely injuring me or a passenger.

As for the steering wheel, some of that depends on where/how you sit. Wearing my seatbelt, I would have to be decapitated for my head to hit the steering wheel. I was in a 55mph full force collision in a Mustang. It was a HARD hit, but the airbag only hit my arm where I was holding the steering wheel. But some people sit much closer.

Yes, my horn works but I had a brass ring machined to make the Momo horn button (with the Porsche crest) to fit into the wheel. Also the hub is a modified Momo part that was re drilled to fit the wheel. I bought the wheel on e-bay about 6 years ago, the horn button and the hub all came form 3 different auctions.
