Your would need a bolt in roll bar on the 928 as well as a fire extinguisher, 5 point harness, helmet, gloves and long sleeve cotton shirt. It really isn't that tough to do. Devek sells a roll bar you can take in and out. A special 5 point belt that attaches to the rear shock mount and works with the stock seats is also available.

Chris, basic car requirements for any speed class 130mph and above (allows 168mph max speed) is a roll-bar (most have the Devek one) fire extinguisher and 5 point harnesses. This is with MKM, the other groups may have slightly different rules. Tires are perhaps most important, cannot be more than 4 years old. I have a set I use only for the ORR events. Beyond that, it is up to you to ensure your car is mechanically sound and capable of sustained high speeds. If you don't want to install a roll bar or drill holes in your car, you can enter the 115, 120, and 125mph classes with a fire extinguisher and 5 point harness (use Devek harness hooks, and Brey Kraus lap belt kit.) Classes at 110mph and below can be done with f.e. and stock seat belts. Fit can be an issue. I'm 6-01, and with a helmet and stock seats my head touches the roof. I have to scoot down. I now use a Recaro SRD seat, makes for plenty of headroom.

Chris:

Here is my summary of ORR and the requirements.
http://www.norcal928.org/road_racing_2006.htm

To sumarize more quickly (target/limit)...
You can tech 110/124 with just a helmet and fire extinguisher
You can tech for 125/140 by adding 5-point harness
You can tech for 140/168 by adding roll bar, Nomex suit
You can tech for 155/168 by adding neck donut, arm restraints

A roll cage and other more permanent equipment is not needed until you go to 160/180.

Tires must be speed-rated for the tech limit and no more than 4 years old.

So, I have a DEVEK roll bar that I install in 30 minutes at the beginning of each season along with harness sets. I have a standard fire extinguisher mounted in place of the cassette box. I have a racing suit, gloves, boots, helmet, arm straps and neck donut. With that I can go 155/168. I put fresh W-rated tires on each year (being a daily driver wears them out).

With this setup, my car can stay an essentially unchanged daily driver. George and Tim's cars are still street legal, but the full rollcage, permanent fire suppression system and fuel cell make daily driving or returning the car to stock a bit impractical. Note: Tim has not done the fuel cell yet so is limited to 155/168.

Cool, thanks for the follow-up guys. I was wondering how people dealt with keeping it as a daily driver but still doing the cage/harness. Sounds pretty reasonable.

Just to be clear, there is a big distinction between rollcage and rollbar. The rollbar can be removable and is just above and behind you. A rollcage surrounds you on all sides and is welded in place.

For me there is a clear distinction between blowing things up and having mechanical failures. It is racing after all.

Maybe "blow up" wasn't accurate for the Ruf......maybe "no-blow" from the failed turbo (if I remember correctly) is more accurate??

However several problems with the new Z06 is disturbing....but I have heard the new Vipers blow rear ends all the time too?
