Thumbs up Cam gear - cool idea

I saw this in the Off Topic forum.

It would be neat if this could be adapted to our cam gears to set the timing... Not sure if it can or not.. still a cool idea.

That's basically what Porken did with his cam timing kit.

I did a simpler version of this concept years ago. I had my machinest cut several keyways with different offsets. It was a little more difficult to adjust that the one shown in your picture but it was simpler, cheaper and possibly stronger with less possibilites of failure.

Ok, probably the dumbest question of the day here:

How is this any different than rotating the gear one or two teeth over? Or is the idea to find tune timing inbetween gear / belt teeth? Or just an easier way to adjust cam timing without removing the belt?

It is my understanding that one tooth is too much. Something like 7.5 degrees. I have also read on here that this might even cause valve interference on a 32 valver.

Search for "Offset Woodruf key." Available in several steps and at about $7.

I looked into those first but they kinda scared me because of the loss of material.

Massivly inaccurate. Cam gears give you one degree increments (or even half if you wanted ).

Do 944 cam gears not fit 928s? Lindsey Racing has adjustable cam gears for 944s.

Cam bolt friction is what holds the cam gears in place. The key pretty much only gives you a reference point.

Forget about the gear, what's the story on the anodizing they use?

Available for most Japanese engines- fairly cheap- don't know if any would fit 928. Ricers put them on for 'bling'. Most don't know what they are for...

On o fthe companies- unorthodox racing, I think, once had plans for 928 units but last time I touched base with them they had canned the project due to lack of market...this is some time ago when exhaust mods were the wild frontier of ownership....

I used an offset key on my old 427 Mustang & it sheared off at 7,500 rpm.
By the way, a 427 Ford is an interference motor! Ask me what I think of offset keys!
