Default What's it worth: '86.5 928 with 5 speed Black/Black?

I just bought sight unseen an '86.5 928 with 5 speed, it is black/black, with 75k miles and rear A/C. Was 1 owner car.

No side mouldings, vinyl dash with only one small crack between defroster vent holes. Seats are in good shape, driver's bolster needs redying. Has tool kit, less pliers, jack spare tire, cargo net, cargo cover.

Rear bumper cover has faded/scratched paint, passenger door has large scratch. Needs a front spoiler (of course).

I bought it inoperative, but it does run now, although rough. Last inspection sticker was 2002, so it has been sitting for a while. Timing belt maintenance is due, as it was done 10 year ago at 63k miles.

I am surprised at how nice it is, tempted to keep it, maybe instead of the S4....?

I can feel Roger getting nervous now... He's probably got his eye on another right now.
Looks great Stan. That's all anyone needs is a later 5 speed with S4 brakes.

Well, a number of people know I am more or less always looking, so I hear about such opportunities know and then.

In this case, another 928 owner had an accident that totaled his '86, and while looking for a replacement he looked at this one, but passed as it was too much of a project, and the price was still high. I asked for the contact information, and sent the owner a note saying if he decided he needed to sell, and would go lower to let me know. A few months later, he contacted me, and we made a deal

The '82 chassis (no interior and no motor, but no sunroof) was supposed to be sold before this got here, but the buyer has dropped contact. So the spousal unit is not thrilled with the quantity of 928sa I have here now (6). Fortunately I have a friend with a building where I can stash some if I need to. The '82 will probably be going there if a new home isn't found soon.

Stan, I'd say 8k - 12k. Real value of this car is 15k, but the market may not support that. I'm thinking if you sold it in Seattle you'd get 8k.

jyoon,

Not about the '86.5 that this topic is about:
The '82s bodywork is in good shape. The interior was taken out, as the prior owner intended to make it a track car, and he kept the motor for another project. So, it is a body with wheels (no brakes) and a transmission. Because it is a non-sunroof 928, it would be a good candidate for someone interested in building a track car. I would be willing to consider delivering it if needed. I would prefer to find someone who wants to make it a track car, or is really ambitious and wants to restore it for street use. You can email me at Stan@928Racing.net if you want more information.

Heinrich,

Thanks, that is what I thought it might be worth once I get it running right.

Stan you have two big pluses. 5-speed and low miles. 86.5 is a good one but not the majot factor. Really I recommend holding onto it, it looks like a very good car.

Heinrich,

I don't expect I will keep the S4 and this S3 both, the race car would not approve of such financial recklessness (it has been idle for a year now).

Many pluses and minuses for either. I really didn't expect to be drawn to this car, but I expect it will clean up nice.

Better to have too few many choices than too few

Stan,

It's got alot going for it. Perfect color combo with a 5 speed and relatively low miles. It may need some work, but it's all there. Fixed up, it's worth $10K-$12K, depending on how much of a hurry you are to sell it when the time comes.

Ebay will sell it for sure, but at a low price. Autotrader or cars.com would be my recommendation at $12K.

Good luck either way. And great find.

By the way, that's identical in every way (with less mileage though), to my very first 928. I loved that car!

I got mine for $7200 with complete DEVEK records with it (esp showing TB/WP)... With the TB/WP I think its worth 8-10k. I got a steal with what i got mine for(and what it came with), and ofcourse we are in different areas. I think you should be able to get around 10 after your work. Even tho i think H is right with $8k, there are 928 lovers out there that would rather pay the $2k to have everything done (turn key). Since your not in my area i also would say keep it, cause S4s are going for 12 now but i see the market going up esp on 5-speeds.

Think once you go thru it & get everything right on it Stan you will have a Shark that would get lots of demand should you decide to sell it. The 86.5 attributes, color combo, 5 speed & low miles all add up to give it lots of marketability. I would think fixed up it would be in the $10-12k range easily, maybe a bit more with the right buyer & depending upon how well it cleans up. The fact that you as the owner are an able shark wrench & racer would only increase a buyer's confidence & thus the value and marketability. That said, I think you should hang on to that one! Oh.... and don't fix it up till you get that racer ready for Daytona in mid Oct..... right????
