On the 928 board, I think the last 3 (Tbelt warning light) are the more offensive words.

When the TB/WP was done did they change the following: Timing belt tensioner big roller, Timing belt tensioner arm, Timing belt tensioner idler, Tensioner arm bolt, Timing belt tensioner small roller, Lower bearing, Idler arm bushings and Tensioner guide sleeve?

Porsche suggests 4 years OR 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. It's a combination of miles and time on the belt. You may not have the miles, but the time is knocking on your door. So, I'd have it inspected and see what the outcome is. It might be wise NOT to wait until next year to have the belt changed, do it now. You probably feel like it's money you can't afford at this moment, but it goes back to the old saying, 'pay me now (a little bit for the replacement) or pay me later (a whole lot due to a failure)'.

Hi Rick - the TB/WP job was done by the PO out in Calfornia, i have the service records but it doesnt go into a lot of detail. I am guessing the work you mention for the tensioner probably wasn't done as thoroughly as I like.

Nee - I guess I kind of agree with you - i have been feeling like I am on borrowed time since I didn't have the TB/WP job done myself, i just wanted to wait for winter. Better not to wait though - the alternative is not attractive.

In the early 80's, I had a tensioner failure on my 911SC, which happened before the Carrera tensioners came out in '84. That was a VERY expensive repair, basically an engine rebuild. After that, timing belts are a sort spot with me so I don't consider running past any suggested time or mileage on Porsches I own or will own.

I was just looking through the Porsche service recommendations the other day. I don't recall seeing a time-based interval on this - nor really on much of anything. Probably Porsche's subtle way of telling you to just drive the damn car.

I think the 4 years is a Rennlist-ism, although that seems to be on the ultra-conservative side. I've seen 45K recommended on the mileage for all changes except the first, something about wear on related parts that aren't changed at every TB job.

Can you find the Porsche reference for the 4 year limit? I can only find the 60 K miles. If it's really 4 years, then I have been abusing this.

I was of the impression that it was 6 or 7 years, especially if the mileage accumulates at a snail's pace.

I do wonder, however, how long the belts sit on a shelf somewhere before they are either rotated out or sold. I suspect the former rarely occurs. G

Personally I would consider doing a belt every 5 years cheap insurance.

Bill, consider contacting Chris (LaughaC). He's near Winchester, VA and is trying to plan a TB/WP "party" for later this month. He's borrowed a Kempf tool and I have the flywheel lock, 3/4" ratchet, socket and breaker bar stuff.

Hey Bill - I saw his post - unfortunately it looks like I am out of town the next 3 weekends in a row otherwise I would consider trailering the 928 out there and having a dual party I'll see what he has to say...
