Default battery cable clips ???

How do they work?
How do I get them open?
Anyone removed and replaced a battery cable?
Any other gotcha's waiting for me?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers,

As the cable comes out of the battery box and heads for the front of the car. There are all these clips that the cable is captured in. I can't figure out how to get the cable out of the clips. I don't know if the S4 is the same as the 16V cars.

Hope that helps by way of explanation.

Thanks in advance.

Ahh OK I believe that you should pry the plastic clips open and then the cable will release

Pry the ends apart? I will try that.

Is there a screw that holds the clamp to the underside of the body?
I need to replace the clamps with something that will allow me to run a larger cable.

Thanks,

There are metal tabs going through the upper portion of the clips. Pry the tabs up from the side, then the clips will separate.

Dennis,
Any suggestions on how to get the metal tabs off the body so I can add a larger clamp? I can't see how they are attached. Thanks in advance.

As an aside, let me just say

Jeez, what a PIA changing this cable is.

Joe,

The metal tabs are spot welded to the body. Are you needing a larger diameter clip? The 0/2 gauge welding cable I used for mine fit in snuggly.

Dennis,
Yes, I went to 0 guage and a 150 amp output alternator. The alt. shop suggested the 0 gauge. I don't think it will fit in the clamps with out hogging them out and the way they are made it looks tough to do. I had bought some insulated marine clamps to do an install like I saw on Sterling Gee's website.

I tried to copy the photo from Sterling's web site but cannot. Here is the link to the install he did http://www.928sg.com/electrical.htm.

You can see the install he did. It looks neat and tidy. I assumed that the holes to attach the clips were already there. Wrong. Never assume anything. !!!

I guess he just drilled holes to attach the clamps.

All suggestions welcome.
thanks

Joe,

Since the plastic part of the clips are there to hold the cable away from the steel body, it won't hurt if they are a little small. As long as you can get the metal tabs through the clips enough to secure the pieces together, it should be OK.

I will give it a try. Time to take the dremel to the plastic housing to see if I can make it large enough without ruining the part where the clip goes through.

Thanks Dennis, I will keep you posted.

For those with S4's or newer!

I just finished doing 1/0 welding cable on my S4. The 1/0 cable I used has at least a third more strands than stock, and I was able to use the stock cable clamps.

On the S4's they used black 9mm plastic nuts that hold all but one of the cable clamps in place. There is one clamp held by a 8mm sheet metal screw close to the streeing box.

I think I used 13 feet of wire at a cost of +/- $23.00 usd to do mine.
