My speedometer was only working when it wanted to. From its actions I felt it was a mechanical problem because it seemed to be heat related. ie when the temp was above 70F it worked more often than when the temp was lower. It did not act like an electrical problem. Since I have it apart I've noticed some corrosion on the reset bar and on other steel parts. Not bad, but metal corrosion non the less. So, what do I do now? Should I lube it and put it back together? Send the speeo to someone?
Someone here wrote about a nut that needed tweeking on their speedo but for the life of me I cannot find the reference. Anyone?

Did speedo and odometer work or not work always at the same time? If so it's probably not internal to the speedo, but a connection problem. If the odometer continues to work but the speed needle did not, it's probably inside speedo. Except for obvious flaws that I might see, I would consider sending it out for rebuild including new odometer gear or exchanging for rebuilt unit at 928Int.
Good luck,
Good luck,

While you have everything apart, check the riveted connections between the gauge foil and the pins that connect to the speedo itself. Test with a multimeter for any resistance between each end of the foil circuit, or just solder the pins to the foil to make sure. Doing so solved my intermittent speedometer/odometer completely. Good luck fixing yours.

All better now, but...... Took the instrument cluster out and then the speedometer out of the cluster. Carefully cleaned all the contacts, some physical, some with crc contact cleaner. Since the spedo was reading high, ie little old ladies in Buicks were passing me at 75mph, I tweeked the needle some. Now reads 48 at 50, 57 at 60 and 68 at 70, according to the wifes Toyota. Getting this thing out the first time was like giving a Feral cat an enema. Second time to check the connections was easier. Now the but.... I gotta do it again to replace the "D" lamp which decided to fly south. At that time I'll add a few mph and hope it is on the mark. While in there I lubricated anything that had two parts with high tech instrument oil and a little white grease. Now on to replacing the seat switch.

I usually (on VDO speedos in VW's) take the needle "over the peg" of the endstop, note its TRUE spring-rest-position, then adjust the needle position by the required amount... not sure if this is how you planned to make the adjustment.
