No one else has any input? I'm wandering around in the dark here.

Have you done what Bill Ball recommended ? Have you checked into AAMCO free trans diagnostic?

I just bought a bottle of transmission additive it is supposed to recondition seals etc. I will add it later in the day. I drove the car to advanced auto parts, and same deal, will not upshift, only downshift into 1st.

How about this, if you can diagnose the problem and I can fix this before tomorrow night I will send you $100 USD. I am serious. If a transmission shop fixes it first you dont get the 100 dollars.

You mean if the trans additive works, I get $100. Wow! Here's hoping, but I fear your are headed for a govenor service or replacement. If you had the WSM you could do it yourself. Seriously, you need to contact Jim Morehouse and get his CDs. Jim's email is jim928ATptd.net - change the AT to @

I have an appointment with AAMCO today at 1, maybe I will get lucky.

I tried pushing down the kickdown button by hand and I cannot hear that click, I could hear it with the kickdown bypass but I cannot hear it now, would that cause this problem?

I'm just getting familiar with automatics and the progression of this thread is a minefield, going in different directions; Check your kickdown relay. I don't see how that could affect a normal shift progression, but getting a "click" manually and then not getting it could mean more than one thing going on here. I don't see any response that indicates you have verified the proper amt of fluid in the res.

You should NEVER move a 928 if you have any doubt that the fluid resevoir is empty. I guess aamco will tell the level if honest. That whole area should be a lot cleaner. Its all part of maintenance on these things. I know your anxious about the warranty deadline, but going slower and figuring out 1 thing at a time will be better and cheaper than flooring it down the street.

The fluid resevoir is not empty, the fluid is bright cherry red.

I took it to AAMCO and that was a total waste of time, they put the car up on the lift and looked around and all they could tell me was that it was internal and they want $395 to take it apart. Screw them.

If anyone wants to buy my problem the first 12k takes it, the ONLY other problem with the car is the A/C has a leak.

May I humbly repeat a suggestion made earlier in this thread by another poster? Try a Mercedes dealer or transmission repair shop that specializes in Mercedes boxes.

We're trying to help you. "Not empty" is what I was getting at, and it is not a good answer, not trying to beat you up, but if someone asked me, judging from the facts here, red lining a "not empty" res is abuse and no one here would knowingly pay $12K for a "problem" compounded by abuse; I'm sure the question was rhetorical. I know you are frustrated by a non-enforceable warranty. A warranty more than an hour from home is less valuable as the distance increases. These are just facts. We buy cars and we take'm across the country; we're not going back. It's built into the offer. Ron H and Bill have diagnosed a problem that isnt' all that expensive to fix. Hopefully they are right. And the Steve they are referring to is the guru on trans. If I were you I would be getting Cataneo's handle and emailing him. Good luck.

Isnt expensive at all? AAMCO wants 400 dollars just to look at it, and I just got fired from my job.
I bought a car with a folder of service records a couple inches thick, and a newly rebuilt transmission, and the peice of **** cant give me a month without trouble. It is extremely frustrating.

Ross,
I hope the car didn't have anything to do with losing your job. It happened to me once on a Renault whose computer went out 1k after warranty. I spent so much time on the phone with Renault America trying to get them to fix the damn thing that I lost my job. The repair bill on that one was $3500.00 When the computer went out, it blew every electrical component in the car. Did I mention the car was only worth $3100.00?
Good luck with your problem, if I was closer, I would come and help. I was looking forward to meeting you at SITM. Hang in there

Ross:

I don't think this would ever be a good car for a youngster without a job. You've got a complex, 19 year old car that will probably plague you with expensive issues. Even a perfectly maintained example is subject to wear and tear and old parts that fail unpredictably.

It would be nice if Steve C were online. However, he would probably say the tranny needs to be looked at.

You may not be up to this, but with Jim Morehouses CDs, you would be able to learn how to remove the govenor and check it for seizing, replace the o-rings and maybe get it working again. If it is the valve body, you could remove that and swap in a rebuild from Steve. That's about $500. But this is only the way to go if you are a willing to get you hands dirty, don't need the car for a while, have a good paying job and don't mind continuing to repair an old car periodically.
