Scott,
Yes I had the printout of the WSM as well as the wonderfull write up by Bill Ball
right beside the car as I was doing the job. Not only that, I checked those marks many times before replacing the covers. However, the way the marks on the back of the cams are supposed to line up with the marks on the heads, I guess it is possible to be off by one tooth on one or the other cams. I'm pretty sure they are correct but I can't argue with the facts. So I will pull the covers from both sides and verify it again just to be sure. It is gong to be a PIA because the power steering pump is in the way on the right side. This time I will use some sort of 90deg ruler or something to ensure that the marks are lined up perfectly. I got down and looked straight at it but I still couldn't be positive...

Thanks for your suggestions and good luck with your issues

Frank,

Are you aligning the cam gears by marks or are you using the notches? Should use the notches.

Scott,

The advance should move the plate ccw. This moves the trigger point to a earlier position when compared to the rotor.

Dennis,
I used the notches. I transferred them to the front of the cam gear with a touch of red paint. I have one very strong eye and one weak one. Sometimes it can be difficult to line things up correctly. I have to use mechanical devices like a ruler. Plays hell with my pool game
However, I am next to positive it is correct. I have been wrenching on one thing or another for 40 years and haven't screwed up too many things so far...

Frank,

Good idea about marking the front. I recently noticed a gear sent to a lister had a mark in front that didn't align with the notch. BTW the notch is useful when checking, as you can set the harmonic balancer on TDC and look down the cover vent holes to verify the notches are centered. Saves a lot of teardown time.

Dennis,
That is exactally what I intend to do this next week to check it. It's actually running pretty good right now. It is idleing smoothly but still doesn't accelerate the way I know it should. I am just going to drive it for a while. Someone said that all the banjo connectors on the fuel distributor had screens so I thought I would clean those and see whats up.

Frank,

Per the WSM, align the driver's side cam notch first then align the pass. side. The WSM states that the notch on the pass side can be off the mark by a bit.
