Default gone too far; too quiet. (RMB to stock muffler - RV)

I decided that my exhaust set up was on the loud side after getting much attention from the other side of the law. No tickets but many stares.

Off with the RMB and back on with the stock rear muffler.............wow; is it ever quiet, I must have got really used to the RMB.

So what do you have that complements the X giving reasonable sound?

ps..........GT resonators

You should run straight pipes.

Just take the whole exhaust system off and save yourself some weight!

Yeah, straight pipes.

I'm suffering the same predicament. I think the S4 resonators are at least part of the problem. The seem to produce a boomy partial throttle hollow sound with an X-over that is really annoying. Doesn't even sound healthy. I'm still mulling over what to do. I suspect A GT rear exhaust or perhaps a rear Y into a 3" with a Borla might work better. I had to put the rear muffler back on just so I could live with the X-over sound my 89 was making, and I hate it. I loved the RMB before the X-over.

Do you have cats on your X Bill? I don't but I was wondering if i had a small muffler apres the X (where the cats go) and put the RMB back on

My car sounds too 'civilised' now.

Crossover (motorsports), cats, GT resonators, RMB are about as loud as I want a street car. No resonance or boom, but wicked under WOT. Between that and the SC under the hood it is a beautiful sounding ride. I would need some additional mufflers if I didn't have the cats.

Malcolm:

I have the Random Technology cats that DEVEK provides on one of their X-over models.

I had a 928 Motorsports Xover, cats, and a RMB. After about three months, I couldn't take the sound anymore. It wasn't the high RPM sound, but a resonance around 2000 RPM under WOT that was pummeling the eardrums. So I'm back to the stock rear muffler for now. Maybe I have an exhaust leak somewhere. I'm still investigating, as I don't like carrying around the extra weight of the rear muffler.

David - Exactly the same issue here - a resonance at low-mid RPM, especially partial throttle that sounds like an anemic ricer with a 5" coffee can tip booming away. I suspect it is something about the volume of the S4 resonators.

I have a set of standard resonators and a GT twin exit muffler - the former are quieter than stock, the latter has a little more growl: one can reasonably tailor the sound level by swapping such components around.

I installed DR's crossover and his hi-flow cats, along with his RMB. The sound is about the same as it was the the stock cats and the RMB, only a little more mellow at idle. Not "officer" loud, but melodic........Not raspy either. I think it is perfect....oh yeah Gretch has a Murph Iron Lung too. When that is pushing 7 to 10 psi, everybody within a mile or so knows it.

Is there that much sound diff between the S4 rear muffler and the GT twin exit version?

If so, is yours for sale Garth?

I am in your exact position Malcomb. I too have the small GT resonators on my S4. After I went catless with the Motorsport X and left my 928intl RMB on, it was very loud. I drove it a couple days and finally gave the stock S4 muffler a try. It was WAY too quiet. I swapped back within an hour. I can probably live with the RMB, but my GT resonators are coming in two, so I am getting exhaust leaks. Since I cannot stand that sound, I am looking into making a X-back exhaust. Motorsports indicates it is still going to be a while before theirs is ready, so I think I am going at it alone. I got some advice from Louie Ott. The Bullet brand mufflers he used on his website are discontinued, so I think I am going to bite the bullet and buy Borla. They are the only ones I can find that are the same size as the Bullet brand, not to mention they are awesome mufflers. I am also going to get mandrel bent turns off the web and have my local muffler shop weld it all together. With 2.5" all the way back it should give another 10-15 hp according to Louie's website.
