Yeah, I do recall installing them during the rebuild after the cams were in already. I've got a bunch of pictures I took during that process.

I'm not looking forward to pulling that cam cover. The holes for one of the bolts only has a few threads left. I still remember shouting expletives trying to get a wrench on some of the lower cam cover bolts.

Yeah, it is much easier with the motor on an engine stand.

I just pulled the cam cover. Not much under there to go amiss and make light metal noises. The chain tensioner and the lifters are all that come to mind. Maybe something is blocking the oil flow to that area?

I've been reading up a little on this. I'm going to pull the cover tonight and take a look. Does the '85 engine have any plugs in the heads that might become dislodged? I've seen information that the S4+ models do.

Stan...do you have a guess about what that sound is? When I did the rebuild, I replaced the chains, but left the tensioners and pads alone since they looked fine. Everything was thoroughly cleaned.

All the gaskets (valve cover and plug) are new (less than 4K miles) so I'm hoping I don't need to replace them after pulling off the cover.

My guess is because of the constant frequency, perhaps the chain is running over bare metal not on the pads. I would think it will be obvious once the cover is pulled.

I would think if you are careful you can reuse the gaskets.

I probably ought to order the pads now if I have any chance of taking my beast to the company car show on Friday. Maybe the local P-dealer stocks them (yeah, right).

I would take the vavle covers off first before ordering any parts. Who knows, maybe you'll need more than the tensioner pads.

From all the posts, I bet it's either the tesioner getting weak or the pads are worn.

Actually, there's a place in Royal Oak that surprisingly has a lot of parts in stock for our cars. There is a $50 order minimum. It's called All European. #248-399-9211. Prices are in-line with big 3 and no shipping (but you do pay tax). You will need to provide them the part numbers.

Just called them...they said it's a Porsche-only part.

I might have an extra chain tensioner in my box-o-parts. I've amassed a small collection of extras...springs, wires, gears, etc. *crosses fingers*

Like I don't owe him enough already?

His willingness to go pick up my car in Dayton is more than I could ever ask!

Well that's putting it mildly. Did you notice the mounting location for the tensioner?
