No noticeable oil leaks, but the rack is dripping when parked. (add that to the list) Service records were poor, which is why I doubt the TB was ever changed.

Car is at my house in Winchester, VA. Dealer tried to tell me this was a special order car without a wing, but they have no basis for such a claim. I suspect the RSS seats are aftermarket (possibly purchased after the Eibach RSS coil-overs)

Does anyone know how to run a VIN number check for the original options list? A CARFAX revealed the car was stolen and recoved in NY years ago, which was said to be why it lacks a maintenance history.

Here is the VIN# WP0JB0923HS860896

Stolen and recovered might explain the "custom" seats because many would steal the seats... seldom is a car recovered intact !

With a VIN that low, it should have a folding wing. I would pass. Automatic S4's are plentiful. Find a better one.

if the car is 5-speed, i would stick it out for that kind of money. It alot of time, but thats about it.
A/c is usually pretty easily fixed, the steering rack is inevitable, the wing is no big deal get another one, and if the TB/WP was done 40-50k ago you would have to do it again!
Once again, if its a 5-speed you could even take it to a good shop and drop $3k on it getting as much fixed possible and still own the car right

BTW, options list is located in trunk area, under rear carpet above fuel tank. If there was an accident, the rear shelf could have been replaced, thus losing the option list.

Regarding special no-wing order, maybe this will tell: check underside of hatch. Are there any indents along the side "spine" of the hatch where the bolt holes for a wing would normally be? If underside of hatch is uniform with no indents along the side "spine" of hatch, it is probably an early replacement hatch.

Good-bye!!

Nice cars are NOT that hard to find... you just have to be patient. And when you do find a nice one, you are MILES and $$$ ahead of the game!!!

Are you looking for a project S4, or are you looking for a nice daily driver S4?

If a project, keep this one and fix it up.

If a nice daily driver, return it and look for something nicer. Just keep in mind it unlikely you will find a daily driver S4 for $4800 (but you already know that).

If it was me, I'd return it, since it doesn't sound like you were looking for this much of a project in the first place. Plus I'd be pissed about having been decieved, and owning the car would only remind me of the deception every time I looked at it. -Ed

I trust these guys. Take their advice. For 4K you can get a runner that is ugly, or a horror show. And you will keep saying, just a little more, this time for sure. Drive the next one , get an inspection, or bring a rennlist buddy.

You mind is a dangerous place. Don't go in alone.

Oh, and the dealer said the "salvage" on the title was meaningless... that it is standard procedure when a stolen car is recovered in NY. I guess I should doubt that too.

Ok, put a fork in me; I'm done. I may have to take a Greyhound bus home from Harrisburg, PA tomorrow, but this car is going back where I got it.

Thanks everyone!

Get rid of it. The hassles with this car wouldn't be worth it. Beautiful machine nonetheless...

-I voted for the supercharged S2 route. Lightweight, cheap, and simple: best combination. Just make sure the S2 is in good shape with perfect compression first.

N!

New York state ...."DMV Commissioner's Regulations require the DMV to mark or "brand" a title certificate if:

a vehicle is eight model years old or newer, and
the owner indicated that the vehicle was destroyed or received damage of 75% or more of the retail value of the vehicle at the time the damage occurred.
The owner must mark the box next to the statement on the back of the title certificate to certify the damage. The statement appears on NYS title certificates that display a print date of "12/94" or later. If the title certificate displays a print date earlier than "12/94", the owner must complete form MV-103 (Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement) and mark the box in the section labeled "Damage Disclosure Statement".
If you fail to disclose damage, you can pay a maximum fine of $2000, and any additional penalties according to the NYS Penal Law........." seems pretty "meaningless" to me
