Get your money back. It's just too weird. Other than the typical maintenance and expected issues, nearly ALL my odd problems have been PO related. I'm afraid that if you start digging into the car you'll find all sorts of hack jobs. The price of a nice car usually equals the cost of a "bargain" car plus all the money you'll spend to get it on the road reliably.

$4800 is pretty cheap for a '87 S-4. It doesn't look too bad, and you might consider doing what you should have done prior to giving up your money. Since it is in your possession still, take it to a 928 mechanic and have him examine it and tell you what is wrong, and what it will take to get it into shape. ****, you can part it out for more than that

Hmm... Do you think I could still break even by parting it out in October after using it for a track car this summer?

Because if I don't take it back I will fix it and start taking it to Summit Pointe (30 miles away). I've already placed some parts orders... hmmm...

Engine $2500
Wheels $800
Trans $800
Hood $200
Hatch $300

But my wife would be very upset, so these new costs would pile up:
Divorce <$400k>
Mental hosp <$200k>

Naw, I don't have the facilities to store a stripped a car, and I'm not putting my 911 outside to hide it in the garage. Maybe someone else will revive this S4.

parting out a 928 is not all its cracked up to be. Its hard work. you need time and space for storage. dont buy it thinking you could always part it out if it doesnt work out for you.

if you want to keep it, try and negotiate a lower price. then when you want to get rid of it, you won't take as bit a loss. i'd probably buy it for around 4k.

I'd make it a track car or return it, and I'm pretty hesitant to strip anything w/a snowball's chance in hell of being reasonably restorable (cept for demi moore/man is she hot or what for an old gal?? er nevermind)...

I just drove it around the block and realized the engine idles so rough that misfires may play a big part in the low-RPM vibratinon.

My socket wouldn't fit into the hemi-head to replace the spak plugs yesterday, so I've ordered a tool that should be here in a few days.

IF it's possible that the 1200-1400 BAAD Vibbbration is coming from misfires, then what the heck was the smoke that started coming from near the flexplate yesterday?

I've heard intake gaskets leak oil. Do they leak down the back of the engine, or is the smoke a tell-tale sign of the dreaded thrust-bearing failure?

I'm may be grabbing at straws here. Just driving the car around the block was a blast. It's the first Porsche I've driven that really feels like a hot rod. You've gotta love the torque of a V8!

Replacing the spark plugs are easy using a standard plug socket there is just a method and patience as those angles are not easy. Try 2x3in extensions instead of just one 5 or 6in drop the socket in first

I picked up my '88 for not much more than you got yours for. TB/WP/tensioners/ALT tires and brakes were all new. Clean title. Paint was/is a bit rough but it passes as a 30ft car now since I have gotten it cleaned up. I had lots and still have quite a few electrical issues to sort out but I'll get there in time.

Where are you at in the DC area? If you wanna come and take mine for a spin tomorrow you are more than welcome to as long as it is in the AM. I am out in Chantilly. Let me know.

For me the title thing is an issue and would not be happy about that AT ALL! If you plan on keeping it and fixing it does the resale value really make a difference? There are some S4's out there that sell into the mid 20K's. Not many but they are out there. If you are going to do the work yourself then you have a WHOLE lot of room between 4800 and 24,000 for improvements. Just some additional food for thought.

Oh, the dealer was correct, in some states a theft recovery can be marked as salvage. How it is titled depends on how the insurance company files the paperwork is the determining factor. The car may have sustained no damage at all in the theft but if the co. paid out $ in the claim they can handle the paperwork any way they want as it is their car. A salvage title in some states can also be exchanged for a "clean" or "rebuilt" title if the vehicle passes certain requirements on a car that has been wrecked. There is a lot of loop to jump through but it can be done. Others here on the board have done it.

Nice wheels BTW

Michael

Default 911 Turbo project weekend

Well, I slept on it and will probably return the S4 unless a mechanic has good news. Can anyone recommend a 928 mechanic just West of DC?.

The plan for this weekend is to start (and hopefully finish) the installation of a BAE turbo kit on my 911. Anyone in the DC area is welcome to drive over and watch or help.

I thought about this all night and have decided to buy a tool locally and change the plugs before letting this car go. Neither of my 13/16ths sockets will fit into the head, so I will look for a thin-walled socket.

Can anyone recommend a 928 mechanic just West of DC? If I find one I will go ahead and have the car thoroughly inspected... thanks for the good suggestion.

I think you need to have the car inspected by someone knowledgeable. This car may be totally worth it ... you bought a cheapie. When we do that, we expect to have issues to fix immediately. Salvage title, if well explained, means very little .... to some it is huge. I think it' just paper.
