Well, I can't be 110% sure about your 79', but from my experience with my 81'.

I replaced both of my rear wheel bearings, and the ride is SOOO quiet now. I had to remove the rear hub carriers and take them to a machine shop to get the old/new bearings pressed. I have read that people have done it themselves before, but let me tell you, the $25 per side that I paid to have it done was ABSOLUTELY worth it's weight in gold. I did bring in the proceedure information that I found on Nichols site, he read it and got-r-done.

The basic process (as I scratch my head to recall) is this:

1. Loosen/remove axle nut
2. Remove tire
3. Remove CV joints
4. Take off your break calipurs
5. Take off your rotors
6. Take off the (PITA!) springs for the e-brake
7. Remove the e-brake that runs through the little tube in the back
8. Remove the top control arm that connects to the hub
9. Remove the eccentric bolts on the bottom (I marked them with Whiteout to make sure they line back up, and be sure to note which pitted washers go where)

I then took the hub and new bearings with me to the machine shop where they pressed them out & back in.

Here is a thread on where I purchased my rear wheel bearings from. I am VERY happy with them, and got them for a MUUUUUCH cheaper price than I have seen by the Big3. Best of luck!

See this thread for the Bearing Pricing / Contact info.

EDIT: Here is a link to the stuff I took in from Nichols site: LINKY
