Spacer Question
So.......
After recieving multiple answers on my question about putting 993 rims on an 88 S4, the overwhelming response was that the rears will fit perfectly and the fronts will have to move out 1/2". The 993 rims are stamped 7 and 55 for the front, and 9 and 55 for the rear. Now knowing that the first number represents the width and the second number represents the offset, I now know that the rears from the 993 will fit perfectly the rear of the S4. The only trouble is, the front of an S4 has an offset of 65, and this, specific to the 928.
So the silly question is, can I put 10 mm (1/2") spacers on the front and use the 993 rims up there? Will I have any issues with the stock tires?

Sorry George Boss,
but adding a 10mm spacer will be the same as making the offset 45 instead of the current 55mm. In other words, the tire/wheel assembly will be sticking out of the wheel well 10mm more than originally, adding the spacer will make it stick out 20mm. The other thing is that the 7" rim is really to narrow for the 928. If you put 225's on the front ( the stock tire size for your 88) it should have a minimum of 7.5" wheel. It's been done before and the tire stays on the rim but it negatively effects tire wear and handling.

A number of owners are running 7" 993 wheels up front with 225's. I haven't heard that it is that big a problem. Yes 7.5" is better (8" is even better yet
, but I'm still looking for a pair

There is an excellent article about this on the Australia 928 web site, see:

for a discussion exactly about this issue towards the end of the article.
On my GT when I put on 993 wheels, I had a 6mm spacer on the rear and was ready to go with a 15mm bolt on spacer before I got my 19" 997 wheels.

as far as the rears go, 19mm spacers for my 997 wheels (11" wide , 67mm offset) didnt do squat, I have to get 2" spacers to really be able to clear the inside of the body. at that point, i'll also be rolling the fenders. the 2" spacers should be here any day
