stupid question - pre-start rattling noise - exhaust leak?
Finally got the '79 together but when I crank it to start, a rattling noise starts after one or two seconds of cranking. It took a while to start, given it had been sitting for months, so I got to hear quite a bit of rattling. (Plus the battery wasn't full enough).
Upon initial run, the rattling noise was reduced to very slight tick that is consistent with the visual effect of dust puffs from the exhaust flange. All went away after the first minute of running.
Now when I start her, I hear the rattling during the first one or two seconds, and it goes away when it actually starts.
Did I not tighten the exhaust bolts enough? What is the approximate torque on those? Bolts and gaskets are new.
Thanks in advance
Tarek

Mebbe tick from valves pumping back up to full hydraulic specs.
My 88 ticks for a little while if left sitting for a week.
Running Mobil 1 0W-40 oil.
Had an exhaust tick on my ex-Audi when it had a broke Exhaust Stud.
Hope you have a smooth trip up to NC, Tarek.

Thanks Andrew and Ernie. No heat sheiled interferences and noise is definitely coming from bellhousing/starter/cat area.
I'm now looking into starter gear alignment.

Hi what about the header attach plates they go from the 19mm bolts on the bell housing to the exhaust header flanges I am not sure if you car would have this , the other thing that comes to mind is the clutch try pushing the pedal to the floor then start it if the noise goes away then your TOB might be going bad, or maybe the short shaft for the cluch has a loose collar bolt, or the release arm is not tight from the conical spring washer on the TOB
