My shark has a similar smell. When taking a friend for a ride a while back he stated " Ahhh that german car smell " just as he sat in the vehicle. So I do believe it is characteristic to the materials used in the interior. My wife's 2000 Mercedes E 430 smells very similar to my 79 928 --- and she happens to think both cars stink....

I must admit that I am a fan of the 356/older 911 aroma. That German leather/fuel smell is intoxicating. My brother's '76 VW beetle is similar.
