We had an exchange student from somewhere in Europe when I was at high school. All he ate was salami and various cheeses. So ... we went on summer camp..... one almost could not pass his room without barfing.

I have to say, my car does not smell. It appears to have never been smoked in, and that may be a contributing factor. My olfactory senses may not be the best, but I do not detect anything offensive coming from the car. From me? Definately. But not the car.

My 93 has a slight odor. I noticed it comes primarily from the vents. Both front and rear A/C units throw the same smell, more from the rear. I tried cleaning out the rear A/C and found the weep holes semi clogged. I think the condensation is not draining properly and it sits causing a musty smell. It is accentuated by turning on the fans.

I am going to spend some time this summer taking it apart cleaning everything to see if it makes a major improvement.

Meanwhile I find when the car sits, I place these new desiccant type odor eliminators in the car and it usually smells fresh when I use it.

I think the heater system should be opened if a car smells, and checked.

Did you know there is such a thing as "Porsche smell"? I've read brand new reviews where the 928 is praised for having the Porsche smell through the vents, just like a 911.

Oh, I agree depending on the model. Most of the earlier cars had that smell of unburnt fuel. Especially the 356's and early race cars like the RS & RSR's. My SC's were pretty good but still had a specific odor.

I guess that can be the case with the GTS, although I would prefer to make it smell as celan as possible. My 94 has an exhaust smell. Has something to do with the heater valves and when you back up, as I do to park the car in my garage, the exhaust gets into the valves and permiates throughout the entire car as it sits. No big deal.

People alwasy ask me this...but no, my car doesn't smell- in 1993, the first owner committed suicide in the car, and he was dead in it for probably 8 hours. It smells vaguely of leather, and vaguely of rubber, but mostly of whatever stuff I've used on the leather lately. I think it smells like grilled salmon-primarily because that dish smells like leather.

My mom recently got rid of her Bonneville; she smoked in that car for 10 years, and though she quit smoking 7 years ago...it still smells like cigarettes. Those things change a car's smell forever!

-Apparently Audi/Volkswagen has engineered smell into their new cars. They actively select materials based upon smell, and they have quality control engineers who's job is to smell cars and materials.

Part of me thinks that job would be pretty cool, part of me thinks it would be weird. I'm not sure I'd want other people to know what I did for a living!

"What's your job?"

"Oh, I smell cars and stuff."

I took a co-worker for a drive, the other day. He said, "This thing smells like a dominatrix's boudoir." I presumed he was referring to all the leather. With great tact, I refrained from asking him how he recognised the smell.

Biggs,

Mine also smell like you described. In fact, when I come home and my girlfriend hugs me, she always knows when I've driven the 928 to work. It's kind of an inside joke we have.

Did you have a Valet park your car recently?

Episode 61 - The Smelly Car
pc: 422, season 4, episode 21
Broadcast date: April 15, 1993

(The car arrives. They drive away. Soon, they discover something is definitely amiss)

JERRY: Boy, do you smell something?

ELAINE: Do I smell something? What am I, hard of smelling? Of *course* I smell something.

JERRY: What is it?

ELAINE: I think it's B.O.!

JERRY: What?

ELAINE: It's B.O. The *valet* must have had B.O.

JERRY: It *can't* be. Nobody has B.O. like this.

ELAINE: Jerry. It's *B*.*O*.

JERRY: But the whole car smells.

ELAINE: So?

JERRY: So when somebody has B.O., the "O" usually stays with the "B". Once the "B" leaves, the "O" goes with it.

(They each do their best dog impression and stick their heads out the window while they're driving. They come back inside. They moan disgustedly and stick their heads out, again.)
---------------
JERRY: So, this morning I go down to the garage to check the car out. I figure by this time, the odour molecules have had at least twelve hours to de-smellify. I open the car door, like a *punch* in the *face*, the stench hits me-- it's almost as if it had *gained* strength throughout the night...

ELAINE: Y'know I can think of at *least* six known offensive odours that I would *rather* smell than what's livin' in your car.

JERRY: What about skunk?

ELAINE: I don't mind skunk.

JERRY: Horse manure?

ELAINE: I *loooove* horse manure.

JERRY: Well, I've never seen anything like this in my life. In fact, I went to the car wash, they want 250 dollars to detail it, and get the smell out. I'm not payin' for that. That's not my responsibility. In fact, I'm drivin' up to that restaurant now, and *demand* they pay for it.

ELAINE: Absolutely.
