Well guys, I went to a local shop today to get my AC charged. I found out that my compressor needs clutches. This happens to be the only guy in town that has a timing lite. I decided to have it checked. It was 19 BTDC. Wow, I moved it up to 28 and it made quite a bit of difference. Now, I am going to move it to 31 (factory setting for this car) and see what it feels like. I was stunned. I removed the distributor to do the intake but marked it before removal. I put it back right where it was. However, at the same time as the intake I did the tb/wp. I was surprised that re-doing the tb moved the timing so far. I mean it must have moved the distributor 1/4". I thought it would move but not that much. Now, when I say I marked it, I mean where the distributor retainer bolt is. I just marked the slider with the area below it.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. This 79 is not quite a dog anymore. I think I can still play with it and get it a little better

Heinrich,
two questions, How much and can I get it before SITM. If I don't get this thing fixed, I will hear nothing but hot flashes and NO ac from my SO. These grannies seem to have this problem you know

Thanks,

You may have put the distributor or timing belt one tooth off, when re-installing it. One cam tooth is 15 degrees ignition advance or retard! I'm not sure how many degrees one distributor gear tooth is.

(You are checking the ignition advance at 3000 RPM, correct? )

PorKen,
Yes, we were checking it at 3000. As it turned out, it was set to 19deg. I moved it to 28 and it is much better. I am going to bump it a little more and try to lean it out a little more to see what I can get.

Thanks again,

Dave,
It made a huge difference. I bumped it a couple of more tonight and will lean it out a bit tomorrow and see if I can't get it where it needs to be. Now if I could just get the Air working, I would be a happy camper
