I've been wondering what the tires weigh. My stock 16 inch phone dials with 225x50 16 Kumhos weigh exactly 45 pounds. That would mean that the wheels are 21 pounds which seems too light for a cast wheel. Are you sure that tires are 25 pounds?

If that's true, I would be very concerned that the increase in weight, as you said, would offset any benefit due to a larger diameter/lower profile tire.

Any thoughts anyone else?

Tires of different manufacturers are very different weights. The cheaper the tire, "in my own experience" (noted so nobody thinks its fact) have been the heavier. I bought some very nice dunlop super sport race tires, added them to some very light 18" BSA wheels, and they are the lightest combo I have ever had.

I've randomly checked tire weights while researching the possible upgrade to 18" wheel on my '91. The median weight for the stock sized 245/45-16 rear was about 24 lbs. Lowest I found was 22 and highest was 26. Forgot which brand was lowest but the Kuhmo's were the heaviest at 26. Comparatively, a 255/35-18 is also around 24-25 lbs. Again the Kuhmo's seemed to be the heaviest at 28lbs.

It's definitely worth checking the tire weight before you buy.

Thats good information. It means that standard 16 inch Phone Dials weigh about 19 pounds. That's really light. (45 pounds my total - 26 for a 16" Kumho) Going to 18" wheels would be a total weight of 61 pounds per wheel! (33 pound wheel + 28 Kumhos) That's a hugh increase from 45 for un-sprung weight. I'm beginning to thing that going to 18 inch wheels is a bad idea.

Be interesting to know the weight of the factory Porsche 18" TT. If they are in the low 20 lb range, like the original 928 wheels, then I think you have to spend the extra cash and get the real deal instead of the aftermarket replicas.

I have the 18" turbo II hollow spokes on my GT. They have pirelli Pzeros in 225/40 18 and 295/30 18. Wheels are 8" front and 11" rear. Total weight is 41.5 lbs front and 51.5 rear for both tire and wheel. Fronts are even lighter than my old club sports with tires.

These are the same as Tony and Darien have on their sharks. I don't think Tony's are hollow spoke but I know Darien's are. Offsets are ET50 front and ET45 rear. I had to slightly flare the rears with a pipe to keep them from rubbing. I'd love to post a pic but I don't know how (hate admitting to that).

With a 50 mm offset on the front, have you noticed any trammiling? ie, a tendency to follow the ruts/grooves in the road. It is said that a change in the scrub radius of that magnitude would cause a problem. (that's assuming that 50mm is a change from stock on your car)

a good alignement does wonders for any tendancy to tramline with these wheels. im running 235/40/18 up front and i really like them although i have just a slight amount of fender contact under extreme cornering.

When posting or replying to a thread, just below the message box is 'Additional Options'. From the menu selections there, click on the 'Manage Attachments' button and then click the 'browse' button in the next prompt screen to select the picture you want. Make sure its not too large, 800 X 600 pixels is usually good.

I did not. Decided that the extra weight was not a good idea, going from 19 lb phone dials to 32 lb turbo twists.
