Default Plastic cover - engine compartment

I need to get a part but don't know what it is called. The plastic cover near the windshield, in the engine compartment, covering the expansion valve, wiper motors, etc.

Does anyone know what this part is called/part #?

Thumbs up

tomcat... That's a "cowl panel cover", p/n 928.574.553.04

They're fragile/flimsy... careful.

G'luck.

Whan you install the new one make sure you do it right. The lip that goes at the windshield side engages into some small clips under the metal lip - they are hard to see... and once the cowl is ripped they no longer work to hold it in place anyway... there are ~4 of them I think- if they have been crushed you may need to do a bit of R&R to open them back up to be just a snug fit for the plastic. If you don't get it back into these clips the wiper motor will chew up the new one too...

Don't usually drive it in the rain, but did today. Found out it hits the wiper actuator. Cover was damaged before I got it, but didn't have a reason to replace it till now.

Thanks.

I just got a new cover in the mail yesterday. ~$70 seems rediculous for a plastic cover, but the previous one was shot. So I broke down and got one, one less thing to purchase now!

Stupid question... but what purpose does that plastic cover serve? Separate the engine compartment air from cabin intake air?

It does that, and keeps rain water off of the delicate mechanicals and the motor that contribute to wiper operation. It shields the electrical and the other AC parts from rain. I refer to it as the 'rain shield' in most instructions.

Tom, I have one for the S4, not sure if it will work for yours but you are welcome to give it a shot.

Michael: If you have an extra, I'll try it. Let me do some checking to see if yours will fit mine. BTW, how did you end up with two? Hoarding parts in your bunker? What else do you have in your bunker?

Alan: Noticed those little clips. When I realized I needed a new cover the first thing that popped into my mind was what am I going to do if one of those broke off?

airosey: $70 Outrageous. Hopefully this time will be a once in a lifetime for this part.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

John,

Got lot's of parts in the bunker. I have been handing them out to all of the weekend wrenchers. I guess that you missed a few GTG's

I am working on the "Garage Queen" I have a rough start to say the least but I obviously can't go far Gotta bring the parts to the car, not the car to the parts.

Oh, you and 87turbolook911 talked me into another 2 years of PCA membership. I hope to have it straightened out before that runs out.

See ya soon. Hopefully you can make SITM!

Michael,

I am willing to give up a lot to go to SITM - Sounds like such a great time. Gonna have that discussion this weekend with Deborah.

Glad to hear about PCA. I think it takes about a month to get in the system. And pls consider HPDC in October. Offer still stands, I'll go w/ camera in hand. And I'll be ready for the shot of you when you pull into the paddock after a run around the track.

Hi I think that the later model cover cover will fit the the early cars, they had a shorter cover IE it only covered the wiper motor and AC expansion valve, the later model cars had a full width cover with a cutout on the left side for the the intensive washer resivour. To install the cover make sure the tabs under the widshield cowl are there and not bent down, then from the driverside (the left side of the car) insert the panel into the right corner of the widshield cowl then while slightly bending the left side gently pull the wires back and push it into the driverside while making sure that the cover engages the tabs, then hook the front onto the firewall ridge after this gently push on the rear part of the cover to make shure that it has infact engaged the tabs then, install the rubber weather strip, you might want to press the rubber strip edge closed with your fingers to provide a stronger clamping force. After this I would test the wipers to make sure that they dont hit the panel, leave the wipers on the windshield and turn the wipers on while looking to see if the wiper linkage is hitting or rubbing on the cover if it is then remove the cover and try to bend the tabs up a little bit

Can we have it made out of aluminium? Looks easy and cheap. I may try it myself.

I was thinking using a good cover as a mold for a glass (fiberglass) cover. No vacuum bagging, just some mat and marine epoxy. Problem is, I kinda remember some contorting required to put it back in?
