Default Hood Insulation/Soundproofing

What have you all been using to replace your shabby/deteriorated hood liners. Anyone have any "homemade" solutions, or am I relagated to ordering a pre-cut liner?

Just digging for ideas....

I am sure you can find a local place to sell you some rubber foam or something similar....

Its probably best to purchase a pre-cut liner though....

I've installed a home made one myself 2 weeks ago. Looks pretty good and costs next to nothing ($25 enough to make 2 liners). Bought a hot water tank insulation kit at Home Depot and some contact cement. Used a piece of cardboard to make a template. Took a while to clean off the old foam and glue (2 hrs) but the end results are well worth it.

I ordered one from Wicks Aircraft. It's the closed cell foam used for a/c (aircraft) firewalls. I think it is very similar to the one on Ebay but thicker (1/2" vs. 1/4"). Wick's has other thicknesses but I figured I would try to match the original's thickness.

They sell it by the ft at 48" wide. Purchased 5' (@$6/ft)- probably could have gotten away with 4' (didn't measure). Shipping was $22. Only difference is I need to fit it.

And, after seeing the decal on the Ebay hoodliner, I ordered a decal from the ebay guy. Didn't save much (~$10), but I did get a thicker liner. Probably get away pretty cheap with a 1/4" w/o decal from Wicks.

Default Look at this SH*t-

Yeah....right. This makes sense: I installed this OEM liner in May 2003- and it is falling apart quickly! I took the hood off, carried it into the house, and removed the old liner with a plastic scraper. I applied the 3M contact cement, and carefully laid the new liner in place while the hood sat inverted on my living room floor. I was sure I had done it right-

Wrong. Check out the first picture: This is September 2003, and you can see a small bulge that apparently formed over the coolant tank.

[that's Andrew Olsen in the pic, by the way]

Second picture: here's my current hood. Not nice! How the hell do you get the hood insulation to stick?

N!

2 things... 1. the OE hood pads don't last. They were made ages ago and do have a limited life. 2. the 3M spray cement does not work well IMO. May the SUper 80 does, but not the Super 77. I had enough of that crap and used the formica counter top contact cement and applied it with a roller. Now that's some serious glue! ~8.00 at Home Depot.

We installed Big Dave's with the 3M Super 80. It took 3 coats and held fast. Took us about 40 minutes to get the hood off, liner on and re-install the hood.

I used a product referenced here with pictures from a company from Dearbon Heights, MI
The ebay ID is robrtmichael. He truly gave fantastic service. At first the product didn't quite
fit my 81 - 928 hood. I left him an email and within 24 hrs he had replied with a reason why
there was a problem and without making any lame excuses...sent me another one within a
week! The new one fit perfect and the decal makes a nice finished touch. I just would like to
pass this along. I will definetly use his product for the next replacement.

I used a material that has a fiber core with aluminized material on one side. Got it from JC Witney years ago. Decided to try it and it looks OK. Very cheap.

If the liner shown above had been available at the time I would have used it. It looks much better.

Remove the hood to do this. Very easy and the hood is very light.

All,
My hoodliner was looking sad too - so I decided to get the Wicks Aircraft nitrile 1/2" foam. It is nice stuff. I also got the vinyl decals from ebay sold only in sets of 2. If anyone going to Denver is interested in a combo of the nitrile foam and Vinyl Porsche crest & 'PORSCHE' decal - (exactly like mine - pictured) I can bring 1 full set for $55. Enough to do the large and small openings. Its not cut to shape but thats easy to do - I cut mine 3/8" larger than the opening so I could tuck it under the lip - worked very well. The Vinyl decals went on very easily too. You need to be patient and careful but it is not hard. Do take the hood off.

I also have enough 1/2" nitrile foam to do one more hood but no vinyl decals for that one $35 delivered @Denver.

If anyone not going to Denver is interested and these don't sell there - I'll be willing to ship (bulky) but cannot do this until August. Right after Denver I'm out of the country for a month... PM me with any interest.

Alan

BTW - based on feedback here I left the hinge on the hood and removed from the car... I still had to mess around with reinstallation alignment both angle/front/back & height - This is more awkward on the hinge to car due to the position and that there are 3 bolts not 2 AND one of passenger side bolt is badly blocked by the blower motor/fan. If I were doing it again I'd leave the hinges on the car...

BTW on my car I needed to add new disconnects for the wiring to the heated nozzles and hood light, check what wiring you have to deal with.

I did not remove hood either for stripping the old stuff or applying the new. It was really no problem. I didn't want to deal with ahood alignment and I don't often have a helper. Just an option.
