I agree. What makes it even more fun is that most of the RX8 owners think they've got a real hot rod. Events such as this just give them a little better prespective on what they really have.

What seems to be the common thread with newer cars is their inability to maintain acceleration after a very impressive start. So if you catch any newer car rolling they really don't seem to be able to continue their rate of acceleration past a certain point. It so happens that it's just about that point where the 928 begins to breathe openly and induction re-tune makes the car rocket forward.

As H said, it was just a snack. Nothing wrong with bitch slappin' the occasional poser. Have to make sure they know their place in the food chain.

Nice one.....whats really sad is I saw the specs on the new Chevy Impala SS....POS family sedan in front wheel drive...BUT with a 303hp V8.....it rips 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and a low 14 1/4 mile...tops out around 140+ too... Its really a retro vehicle in thats its a big *** sedan with a monster motor that won't turn or stop worth a damm.... Does Godzilla like impalas?? :>)

I agree with what H said. Most of the newer cars are geared to accelerate till ~100mph. Then they pretty much run out of steam. I think this is intentional and looks good for advertising. To have good acceleration till 100mph will generate a pretty good ¼ mile time too, but what the advertising fails to show is what happens after 100. Since we have pretty low speeds limits on this continent and most drivers don’t go past 100, this works really well for majority of the public.

I took an RX8 with my Mazda 6 V6 Auto. From stoplight to 60 he didn't have a chance.

I took an RX8 from a light on my TREK 6000. I had a pretty good launch, even with off road tires. I pedalled hard for about 30 feet, saw I was ahead, and declared victory! That will teach him to fiddle with the radio at a stop light.

To be fair, if it was uphill, it may have been a different story

Iceman - now that's interesting on the Impala.

Driving home yesterday in the '80, I spotted a GM something family sedan that seemed to pep up in the #1 lane, as I approached rather spiritedly in the #2 lane. Both lanes had cars, so I slipped right to open #3 and accelerated to get back into #2. At the same time the sedan shot from #1 to #2 ahead of me with some giddy-up. I rolled into the throttle to pace behind him and was surprised it took me WOT to hold at ~3 cars until into triple digits!! before beginning to catch him. I'm thinkin' this guy IS in a hurry, but man, that boat is moving forward. Impala SS with dealer cardboard plate still on it (funny looking spoiler for a family car too).

Anyway, seems the guy was making sure he got what he paid for when he saw me coming up behind. Granted, the '80 is no rocket, but it gets a decent groove on at freeway speeds, so I was shocked as hell that this guy was in an Impala!! Guess it is new and improved ;-)

They were supposedly 240 to 250hp....but I have been to a few RX8 dyno shoot-outs where stock RX8s were pulling just 100ft.lbs of torque AT THE WHEELS - how embarrasing for an owner who just dropped 30large on a supposed sports car that cannot even pull 100ft.lbs at the rollers.

Mazda bough back many of these cars due to very dis-satisifed owners. Plus the oil consumption problem.

A friend of mine works for MazdaSpeed in Anaheim, CA so this is fact.

The new Turbocharged RX7 supposedly coming here soon will be another beast altogether. The older FD3S RX7 that were twin Turbo'd (last year was '96) would give an S4 a sweet run.

Some kids in a nissan altima gave me some chase once on the highway while on my street bike. I thought "what the hell?" Some of the tuner/ricer kids have some shizz-nizzle going on under the hood from nitrous to superchargers and the little engines are tweaked to an inch of their life. Hero for the moment...
Porsche 928... a balance of handling, power, speed, comfort, brakes, durability, style. I'm totally biased!
