Humm,
Yes it does look rather better that way up - didn't look so obvious in the other post. Looks like you cleaned the engine too...
Wish my PO had been more like you...!

Just to complete MrMerlin's explanation of sill removal.....Just put two new ones in. The new came with the white bits to go into the sill grommets attached, and the metal clips for the body seam and they didnt have the rear rivet hole .On first try I couldnt get the rear end down flush, so I pulled it back off per MRMerlins instructions, carefully. The black velvet beading that covers the body seam at rear of door jam was interfering with a ridge on the underside of the plate - the inner edge of the plate is like an inverted W in section, with the centre ridge the part that engages the metal clips. So I cut a piece of the black seal away to clear this piece of the plate - on the inside of the body seam, about 1" up from the end, 1/8" wide. Also, on trying the remove the locating pin under the clear logo part, the black plastic tends to come away from the clear, so take care to lift the clear part. To reduce the chance of damage here at next(?) removal, I cut back the tip of the locating pin on the clear part by 1/8-3/16", so it doesnt need to be lifted so far. I also felt uneasy using much force on the plate to drive home the metal clips onto the body seam, so I removed the clips from the plate, noted where each was in relation the white pins, and fitted them to the body seam directly - quite some force required. Then when I fitted the plate, locting pin first, then the white pegs, it all went down nicely, the white pegs snapping in , and then the ridge going into the metal clips, and it was done. There didnt seem any need to fit the rear rivet thing in my case.
Thanks, MrMerlin.

I took pieces of metallic-foil duct tape & slid them underneath About 2" wide- perfect fit. What shows through the plastic windows is a nice looking brushed aluminum look, & can be removed in a matter of seconds, since I didn't remove the adhesive backing paper.

jp - Thanks for the confirmation that the rear pin is not needed with new sills. New sills are about $100 each, still available, and come with the attachment items, as jp mentioned.

Here is another variation of the stainless door sills on Bill Swift's car.
Bill opted to slide the center piece underneath the door sill, so that the original clear letters really pop out on his black car.
