I've done mileage calcs on different grades of gas, and figured out that the cost 'savings' with a lower grade of gas was more than offset by the decrease in mileage, as the mixture smarts and the knock sensors conspired to richen the mixture and retard the timing with regular. Plus, regular pings on hot days with AC on and low-end acceleration is demanded. Now with gas at $3.50 for premium and a 20 cent 'discount' for regular, the percentages are even more lopsided.

The just-departed Explorer responded favorably to gentle driving, slower driving, etc as ways to get back closer to the 22mpg it delivered when new, back in the 55mph days. I decided to drive the car at max 2000RPM cruise, max 2500RPM accellerating, and was easily able to top 20MPG in mixed driving. The 928, meanwhile, seems to do best just a little slower, at 55 MPH cruise. Easy 20MPG average on the freeway. Run it up to 75 (normal no-accidents traffic speed here)and the mileage goes down to 18.

So take the drive, but be gentle with the loud pedal if you want to save a few dollars.

But then, you have the car because you don't drive 55, because you enjoy the journey as much as you do the destination, and if you wanted to go 55 and sip gas you'd have bought a Corolla instead.

Call this a vacation and your budget changes some, doesn't it? That should wipe out the hotel and lost-wages components, since you were going to go somewhere anyway. Wait, you say that the vacation is reserved for her too? Bring her along! Word out lately is that women are actually --allowed-- to participate in these events. Some women are actually allowed to drive! Call me crazy, call me radical, but it's true! Plus, with the driving duty split you'll be more rested when you get there. One long day with two drivers is better than two days by yourself and another hotel bill. Use the hotel savings to cover her bar tab, and maybe have enough change for gas for the mountain tour portion. You might even save a few more $ by grabbing a few big bags of chips at Wal-Mart, instead of buying them at the bar...

Can't think of any good reason why you shouldn't go, can you??

Why not talk a buddy into riding shotgun and have him chip in half the gas and hotel cost. Problem solved.

15mpg does seem a bit low......but look at it this way....say $500 for the weekend & some priceless memories that will last forever!!! Find one of those 0-4% credit card offers.....I get those damm checks about twice a week!! So it takes you two months to pay it off.....in the end you will think it was worth it!!

when I drove my shark home from Pittsburgh last week, I got around 22.6 mpg. 304 miles on 13.4 gallons. i made sure to top it off when i left, and top if off when i got home. avg speed was around 75. just a nice steady pace, only one run up to a 110 mph on a nice straightaway.

Art, Bob, your mileage observations are for later cars. Borys, I find that on road trips I get nearly 19mpg averaging about ~85(including stops). So that's a $67 discount right there...

Borys,

here's a couple of options:

- Drive to columbus and ride with me
- I'll help buy your beer too...becuz I OWE YOU some
- Me and a few other porshe owners rented a lodge, stay with us and this will drive our cost down alot. I think it would be about $100 for both nights total.
- I can't think of anything else...

Does that help at all???

Brad-
If your car is like it was last year, he could hook up a hose from you leaky check valve and drive off that the whole way!

Good call on the lodge! I'll have to look into something like that next year.

I'd go but I doubt I'll be off the first days of the month. I'm junior as a Captain.

-My brother is graduating from college in Ashville on May 12th. I could take the 928 to AVL in May and leave it there until SITM. Otherwise I'm not sure I'm going to make it.

I don't lie to my girlfriend, who'd have a problem with it. I could just tell her that I've got an FMS training event in Ypsilanti then drive my 928 under her nose to NC.

-That would be dishonest to the female and I won't do it.. She'd know I was lying anyway!

I'll be there if I can work it out. I want to go-

THIS TIME I'LL WEAR A JACKET!

I was there in 2002 and looked like a drowed rat shivering on top of the mountain amongst the 928's!

N!

Normy,
The slightly later end-of-May SITM date has been kind to the sharks.
Bit less of that cool mountain weather than the early May days.

Didn't need the Saint Bernard with the whiskey flask last year.

Did about 280 miles with 14.5 gallons last weekend. Smiles/gallon. Priceless.

Well, I talked to the GF and she wants to come, but final determination will be made when she requests her days off work. She will be able to help pay for it a little, which is good. For everyone who offered to buy me beer thanks, but I dont drink (personal choice), so my GF will drink for me. As of right now we plan on leaving Chitown friday, and which means we will roll into NC late, depending on what time we leave chicago. Stay sat night and leave sunday, probably early since GF has a final exam mon morning. Things are looking up! Now will my shark stay together? thats another question.
