Default Shift Kits / Parts for auto trans

I found this place that sells trans parts to shops and individuals. They have several listings for the Mercedes 722 trans. I was wondering if these would work in the 928 auto trans. The rebuild kits are very reasonable and they offer shift improvement kits for the valve body. I was thinking we would use the 722.3 or the 722.4 kits as they are for the trans with the 6 bolt pan. What do you think.

If you do the overhaul, you won’t need a valve body shift kit.

When I overhauled my automatic, I was afraid to use "value" parts, so I used only “genuine” Porsche and “genuine” Mercedes parts. The only aftermarket parts I used was the pan gasket and filter.

The PET lists Mercedes part numbers for these automatic transmissions. So you can get the part numbers from the PET database and take them to your Mercedes dealer an purchase them there. My local Mercedes dealer stocks all the seal for these older transmissions, but not hard parts. I only bought a couple o-rings from my local dealer as they didn’t offer any discounts. Tell them it’s a 722.3 like in a 560SL.

You can also search the internet and find discounted genuine Mercedes parts dealers. I purchased some hard parts that way.

I bought the Porsche seal kit, because when I priced it with Sunset Porsche, it was cheaper than the discounted Mercedes kit. Porsche uses a Mercedes seal kit; and my kit still had the Mercedes labels on the packaging. I did find that Porsche included a Porsche pan gasket inside, while some of the seals were clearly not used on this Porsche transmission.

A few of the required seals were missing from this kit, so you need to check the old PET5 to see what seals are not included before ordering. One of the gaskets for the secondary pump was the wrong size, even the Mercedes dealer supplied the same wrong size until he noticed a VIN change on the pump and was able to source the correct size.

You need some special tools to complete the disassembly following the WSM, but fortunately I was able to fabricate them all with locally obtained hardware. Most of the measurements can be done with inexpensive calipers which typically include integral depth gages.

The most difficult part is the pinion nut which requires a torque of 275 ft-lbs (367 ft-lbs for GTS). So you need a ¾” torque wrench and breaker bar that can handle this. Mine required over 400 ft-lbs to remove. Without a fixture to counter hold the transmission makes this task impossible. For this pinion nut operation, I made a truss from $40 of perforated structural steel that I bought and later returned to Home Depot. So I was able to remove the nut without any help of another person.

It’s quite interesting at how many rather large and heavy objects come out of this transmission. I bought several stackable plastic storage boxes from Big Brands discount store in various sizes. So as I removed components, I kept everything together by phase of disassembly. This boxing also served to preserve cleanliness which is very important part of the overhaul.

Steve Cattaneo here is a great source of information and help. The WSM is great and details almost everything, but some of the procedures are not as clear as they need to be.

Thanks guys. Not looking to do a rebuild at this time. I have done all of the cable adjustments and I am still not happy with the way the trans shifts. I am sure it is the way the valve body is set up. I am thinking someone in the past got in there and messed with it. I'll be at SITP in a few weeks. Maybe someone who knows transmissions will be there and can give me some input.

I would imagine that Rennsport would be a good source for trans sutff, given all their Mercedes work. Would be nice if one or more of the vendors located and carried a shift kit, upgraded torque converter or adjustable modulator (assuming the trans has one, I'm a manual owner).
