Hi Guys,
I have a 1987 928S4. I am experiencing minor intermittent starting problems.
I was going through my cars (PO) records and noticed a mechanic had previously noted "Crank Angle Sensor Harness wiring frayed"....
I don't know if this had been fixed or not and I don't know where to look ?
I had a look at PET parts but this was of no help and confused me even more with the following parts:
Timing Mark Sender 911 606 108 00
Impulse Sender 944 606 115 00
Hall Sender 944 606 170 01
Can someone tell me what the difference is between all of these and where they can be found on my car ?
You help would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks in advance.

If the crank angle sensor is intermittant it's more probable that your car will suddenly stop after you go over a bump, not that it will be hard to start.
You'll need to remove the air filter holder and look underneath it. The crank angle sensor itself is in the bell housing behind the engine, but the wire takes a funky turn before it plugs into the harness and the wire or the connector can get very brittle.

Someone just had a thread about this. I do not know exactly what that record refers to but you have 2 sensors over the flywheel. The furthest one back is for diagnostics with a wire and connection point near back corner top engine drivers side (US).
The sensor that sends pulses to the brain for starting is just in front of the other sensor directly over the flywheel. The wire joins into the main harness that goes back thru the firewall to the CEB. hth

Thanks for that ! Ill check under the air filter for any obvious problems first.
As for the starting problems I suspect I have a leaky injector because I noticed one of my spark plugs was wet when I did a spark plug change recently!
If the engine is hot or cold (has been running or even just started for a few seconds) its hard to start . The only time its starts easily is if the car sits overnight or for many many hours.

That was me! I also have an '87 S4.
I had starting issues because when the car was running it vibrated enough to not short the sensor to the block, or if it did it only lost its mind for a bit. However, when starting, it never got going well enough to vibrate and "unshort".
The main harness itself was worn through. I cut & hard wired a new sensor in, as I destroyed the old one getting it out... assuming it was the problem because the it failed the testing, and there wasn't enough left of the old plugs to save.
To check for problems, pull your airbox and MAF. It is down underneath there near the firewall. I can't remember which is the "test" one and which is the real one, but if you've got problems, just look all around. You probably need a mirror and an elf to replace it. It took me forever!
