Default Original Paint Chipping/Peeling

Hi all,

The paint on my very clean all original 85 is starting to chip and peel. When it happens, the paint is literally "flaking off". It reminds me of the lifting off on the finish I had on some outdoor aluminum furniture years ago!!

Is this a common issue? I did a search and didn't really see it discussed. I'm touching it up when I see it, and the car still looks very nice, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do to preseve it. It has always been garaged and covered....

Thanks as always for the input!

I have seen many 928's and the ONLY flakers were repaints.

Who carries the Touch up kits for chips?

I recently discovered that there are many shades of black and being that my 89 Shark is a 2 stage paint the color code doesn't help to the one stage paint conversion . Does anyone know if the later year one stage paint is the same shade of Black as the earlier ones?

Hi Guys,
My 79 Euro - lite blue metalic has its origional paint and it looks pretty darn good after 27 years. No flaking anywhere... I can't believe it has held up so well.

Hi where is the paint flaking off? I had a 79 petrol blue, and I took tpo the bodyshop for some hail damage to get few small dent taken out, i put some tape on the dents to mark them and the next day I was taking off the tape as the body man was there to see the dents and the tape lifted off the paint/primer down to the bare aluminum, so next I took a razor blade and it was very easy to scrape in one pass down to metal, (Aluminum), it looks like the PO had the paint refinished and they just primed the metal with laquer primer, after taking it down to all metal, we alodined the aluminum parts then zinc chromated the whole car then epoxy primered the whole car then block sanded it then reprimed with the same epoxy sealer, wet sanded it then put on the original color petrol blue with a medium build clear and after it was wet sanded 2 times and buffed three times it looked like a brand new car, the paint job was show car quality, i should have never sold it it was a 5 speed, Stan

Well, you guys are always (just about!!) right....

The PO confirmed that the fender that is having the issue was repainted. Probably did not prep the aluminum correctly!

Thanks.
