I don't think there is much to lose in trying to drive or at least rev it to see if it changes.

Well we could be looking at a good crank, rods, pistons, block with just a bad rod bearing. If we revved or ran her, we might break the rod end; damage the crank; push the rod through the side of the block .... no?

The oil passages get restricted as well as the oil pick-up. Oil starvation starts and Its all down hill from there.

With the Toyota It started when they switched from Iron block to an all aluminum block and eliminated the oil cooler. Also the pcv chanber in the valve covers were redesigned. I guess they felt the aluminum would be a cooler engine, That coupled with the forgetfull people who did not changed their oil reguarly caused the oil to "gell". There is a sort of "silent campaign" still going on through toyota for those veh. If it is "gelled" through toyota, I just takes "proof" of 1 "lof" per year as proof of maint and the dealer is self authorized. they will replace the valve covers, desludge the upper end, valve seals, pull oil pan and desludge.

Hendrich, Not having the service hostory of the car, expecially with lose mileage the sludge could be normal engine oil break down. the PO may have only changed the oil at the factory recommended intervals...for some of us that is several years if we trac by miles. The quality of the oil also plays a role.

I'll be the optimist here and suggest that the knock is only a stuck hydraulic lifter. A little liquid therapy with the proper fluids and she might clear right up.

... thanks Steve. Well Rog says it is definitely not a tack-tack (flywheel) or tick-tick (lifters), but more of a knock-knock, and he says it is so loud you definitely do not want to start her up. To me this means something more serious than the many many head noises and such I have heard. But ... we never know, and are eternally hopeful

Actually.....Rob Fossett had a nice knock knock sound on his 85 928...a while back...usually present when cold on startup.....

Turns out it was a bad waterpump..shaft moving in and out..perhaps a peek to see what the belt is doing....

could be as simple as a new waterpump..

Good luck,
Tom

When the rod bearing went on the 86 I had, I distinctly remember the sound reminded me of the sound that Bogey's steamboat made in the movie African Queen. Yeah, just call me strange.
