the wear will be on the bottom of the inner seat, if you had a bearing to test fit on the spindle you can see how much it is worn

this is how I did it.
step 1.
Go to your local quick mart and pick up a 6 pack of beer.
step 2.
on the way homw sotp by sams club, costco, sears and buy a floor jack and $100 tool set
step 3. drink all 6 beers as fast as you can
step 4. take a pic of your 928 and post it for sale on craigslist for $2000 cause if you can't clean out and repack a front wheel bearing you prob shouldn't own a 928!
step 5. get more beer......speaking of beer i need to go......good luck its a pretty easy job

Besides, when I started out (deep into the last century sometime, early alzheimers prevents me from remembering that far back), I didn't know when wheel bearings were fried or not, so I just replaced them all as a matter of routine. For most, the finger tight thing is good, as long as they remember to go back and check after a few rides to see if anything has loosened up. There shouldn't be ANY up/down, back/forth feeling of play in the hub (but be careful to watch the steering parts so as not to confuse steering movement with loose wheel bearings), but the wheel should spin easily w/o the brake caliper on the rotor. Put the wheel/tire back on; if you try to spin it and it stops abrubtly, it's too tight; it should spin a few times around. And after one drive around the block, your wheel bearings shouldn't be hot. If they are, they're too tight.
