can anyone tell me how i can find out what my interior carpet color is. Is that something that could be pulled of the VIN? Going by SEM color coat chart it looks close to "sandstone" which probably isn't a factory porsche color.

VIN doesn't help other than it will tell model year which in turn will tell what was available. You need to find option sticker. Search archives how to find it in trunk and/or service book.

the car is a 1986.5 exterior color is stone gray interior is brown and what looks like a very light gray or tan. I could snap a picture, but i doubt it's going to help much since everything looks a bit off on a monitor.

A COA (Certificate of Authencity) from Porsche will list the interior color... A pic will help, when you say brown, is it more of a caramel or a darker brown....I've never seen a two tone gray-brown....the really light grey is called Linen..its really an off white...very common too.

That's a very small picture... I can't tell for sure what I'm looking at here. However, my best guess would be that you have "grey beige" leather with either grey beige or light grey carpet.
How close is the color of the leather to the carpet? If the carpet is lighter, it's probably light grey. A better, larger picture taken in in daylight might help.
