Default Single 3" exhaust sound?

Guys anybody here got a Euro with a single 3" exhaust? I was wondering what it sounded like? The reason I ask is that I'm about a month away from starting my car and I'm getting very curious as to what it might sound like. My car has an X-Pipe and 3" burns mufflers leading to GT mufflers in 3". It has no rear muffler, so it might be loud? But when it runs at low revs and idles it only uses one of the 3" pipes, hence my question.

Also I think I might have the most expensive exhaust system on a 928? It is embarrasing! I have spent $5K AUD or about $ 3750 USD just in materials. That doesn't include 2 half months of labour! That is frightning, it looks good but and is light

Cheers Greg

I have a singe 3" exhaust on my euro 928 and I love it. The system is Martin Schneider headers, 2.5 "y" off headers to a 3" pipe, back to a Dynomax muffler where the resonator was ( no cats ) . 3" back to tailpipe. Tailpipe is a 2.5 "y" with dual 4" monza tips, totally fills the factory cutout.

I love the sound, has a nice growel, more at lower RPM's and accell. has a glow grumble when cruising.

MSDS Headers into custom Y. then high flow 3 " cat into mandrel bent 3" pipe into 3" in and out magnaflow muffler, to double 2.5" outlet. See photos. The system is very light weight and sounds great to me. Below 2000 rpm, it burbles and rumbles nicely. Setting off car alarms in parking structures above 3500 can only be describes as wail or shriek. sounds more like 12 than 8 cylinders. Way too loud at higher rpm to get on it in congested areas. Keeps me from impromptu street racing. It's probably too loud. It failed a noise test. at 3000 rpm the limit was 92 db and my car was 96. This was on a meter that was about four feet behind the exhaust tips and aimed right at them. I can't bring myself to add another muffler, although I could if need be. I hope this helps.

Cheers

s928s I have a single 3" exhaust on my euro 928 and I love it.
That's what I wanted to hear, I take it it is louder than the stock system? Has it got a drone to it? My friend's full custom exhaust has a bit of a drone. It is not single 3" though.

Thanks Joe F, that's is what I thought might be the case, too loud to really tromp it in built up areas, not that I do that anyway. Not one speeding ticket in 25 years, 2 warnings though .

Cheers Greg

I had an Ott-pipe (can't call it an x-pipe anymore...see other thread) into a single 3 inch, then into 2 Borla's in series, with stock exhaust manifolds on the 84 Euro S engine. VERY loud, I mean crazy loud. Can't carry on a conversation loud. Bad resonance at freeway speed, then fine above 80 mph, then resonance again 105-120 mph, then fine. I removed the Ott-pipe, and installed an S4 catalytic convertor. Now the sound is PERFECT. Very lightweight (well, not the cat), engine revs freely, sounds great. Sorry, no sound files. Added 25rwhp.

Thanks Rich, again very interesting, I'm hoping I don't get those probs you did. My car doesn't need to run cats, they are only came in in 1986 in Oz. Were the Borlas like "hot dogs"?

As to calling it an X - pipe I think I might be able to get away with it down here. He probably only owns the rights in the States, so he can jam his X where ever he likes.

Hey s928s, who is Martin Schneider? Is he just some guy who made a set of one offs, or is he into full production? What was the performance increase over stock? TIA,

OH, I'd never heard of the MSDS headers mentioned by his name before. Makes sense now. Thanks.

BTW, I've been running MSDS headers on my GT for almost 5 years, so I am "somewhat" (LOL) familiar with them. Love the sound, hate changing collector gaskets every 6 months!!!!!!!! I have plans to eliminate the collector flange, and switch to something else, where I won't have to worry about leaks again.

My Y into single 3.5" with a spintec muffler and a short bullet muffler w/ a turndown tip hits about 90db. Sounds great, but may be a bit much for the street at full throttle unless you like that song

The typical hotrod V-8 sound is a direct result of the uneven firing order where no matter what you do (short of a flat crank) at some point two cylinders on each bank fire one after the other so when fitted with dual exhaust it has that sound most attribute to a powerful V-8 engine. Plumb it into a single pipe with a somewhat low restriction muffler and at higher RPM it SOUNDS more like an exotic high RPM engine as you no longer hear that irregular firing it just roars or screams. It is a bit like what makes a Harley sound like a Harley our ears hear the irregular sound as a good thing.

Have you thought about a copper collector gasket? like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/COPPE...46481670QQrdZ1

I am thinking trying them. It says reusable, which should last much longer than regular gaskets.

I have MSDS headers to a 3" U-shaped Y-pipe then back to a 3"in/out Magnflow 4x9" straight through muffler next to the tranny then 3" out the sotck location. It is loud. To me it sounded louder than David Lloyd's car at Frenzy. It doesn't really drone, but long drives could be annoying if trying to carry on a conversation. Over 3k rpms in town is obnoxious and gets looks from over a block in every direction. I love it, but I might add another Magnaflow where most cars have a cat.
