I have some exhaust gasket material stuck in there right now as a shim... very slack, not at all shipshape. Anybody have a low cost option that doesn't look like a bag of ***?

I just did a search, Randy... the low-cost replacement looks like it's only good for pre-85 928's. I have those crazy metal hook buckles on mine.
Sigh...

One or both of these at the below link should work and they are only $9.99 each.

Call Karl at ImagineAuto (913-310-9927) and ask him. He got me four of them recently, and got me a good (um, thats a relative term for what is essentially a rubber strap) price on them.
Disclosure: I have no financial interest in recommending ImagineAuto, but Karl and Stephen are friends of mine, so I may not be the most objective person to ask for a reference on ImagineAuto.

Another option is to make your own. I made a set for the 931 (uses the same strap as the 928) using bungy cord ends and colored silicon tubing. The jury is still out on whether it looks too ricey.

$36 Bucks for a Air box Strap ?? I know, its high, but...up and down the car, parts are expensive.....$140 for an Interior light Delay relay, for example ...Etc. You can often find complete airfilter box assembies on Ebay with ALL the straps... for $75 or so...just look around and you can beat the "new" price severely...

IIRC, A lister posted about how a 911 strap can be used. There are more than a few aftermarket options for the 911 parts, if you can go that way.

I found a $2.50 fix for my air box straps. I used tire chain tensioners. They look like a huge rubber band about 3/8" in diameter. One tensioner on each side of the box. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow to show what I mean. I know it sounds red-neck, but it works great and doesn't look to "rigged".

I've seen pix of someone using large zip-ties (I think it was M21Sniper). Clean looking--if you keep the lock at the back of the box, outta sight--but then you have to deal with cutting them to get the box open and keeping some replacements on hand. And, if you want to add a little of the "tuner" look, I'm pretty sure the zip ties are available in neon pink and neon green!
