well, question. for those of you currently blessed with more knowledge than I. I want to replace the rear speakers in my 81 auto, but I want to know what I have for options. are they tough to get to? what is the impedance on the stock speakers? I have seen somewhere here in rennlist heaven someone replaced the rears and cut the rear inner panels to accomodate the speakergrills on the outside of the panels, rather than completly hidden. can anyone walk me through this? TIA ------ Tim

I'm afraid I won't be much help, but here goes. On the S4 and GTS 10 speaker set up, the three aft speakers are in the rear side panel, and they all have grills and are not hidden. They can be accesed by removing the grills, but the wiring runs under the panel and the panel must come off to work on the wiring. If you went to this type set-up you would be updating the looks of the car. If I remember correctly all Porsche stock speakers are 2 ohm. Most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm so you have a problem right off if you plan to use the stock head unit and amp.
I believe the best set-up is a new head unit (with more power or external amps) and aftermarket speakers. After 25 years I doubt your stock speakers are any good, even discounting all the improvements made to speakers in the last 25 years.

I have a little bit of knowledge on on sound (used to judge IASCA) but I'm green when it comes to the 928 so I'll do my best to help.
A few questoions before making any suggestions. What do you currently have installed? Have you changed any of the door speakers or the deck?

This is something I've been working on for two weeks now. My system started out as a 2, with all new wiring and configuration it is now a 4. I can now determine the quality of the speakers., and they are shot. The problem I had was all the one way speakers it had. 4 high 4 midrange and 2
bass. This won't work today! 6 1/2 and smaller will either be 2 way or component. you need to watch out for too much high your "tweeters". New cars may only have 2 tweeters. My 6 1/2 speakers
are component not using the tweeters my 4" speakers are 2 way. My 2" tweeters are disconnected. I have put a new amp in the trunk and installing new radio in the dash.
I'm using Polk Audio for speakers, Eclispe radio 4000 and alpine amp. When all done may need sub woofer and amp to power. these cars are under bassed so take your time.

its been about 6 months since I sat in my baby... in iraq they dont let me drive Porsches... but, from what I remember, the rear speakers... yes, the location you described shark, are covered by the interior rear quarter piece. like, the whole leather ( or maybe vinyl) interior section, covers the speakers... it just has preforations in it where the speaker is behind it.

My 83 has the rear speakers behind perforated quarters, same look as the door panels. I replaced them with 4" Boston Acoustics in the rear and 3.5" in the front. I had to pull the rear panels, but it wasn't to tough to do.

when i replaced the rear panels on my 83 928 there were speakers behind the perforated sections on the outside of each rear seat in the position pictured by shark. there were also speakers behind the panel directly on top of the wheel well, just below the rear quarter window on each side.
i didn't replace these speakers. they were low profile speakers ( the magnet thing is located inside the front of the speaker instead of on the back). i really didn't feel as though the would make much of a difference anyway. and since i'm not much on radio listening, plus the extra expence of the speakers, i put that money on other things.

be careful because the cardboard backing is old and brittle. you will have to remove the upper part of the rear seats. there are screws under the rear carpet section, along the bottom of the panel, and on the top front and rear. the section over the rear quarter glass has those plastic push in keepers. there is also a clip that hooks in place over the wheel well. you will have to lift up on the panel after removing all the screws and keepers.
if the cardboard is cracked or deteriorated in any way, you should repair it before reinstalling. i used fiberglass to fix mine.
