Default Tailight/Headlight Prob...

Went on a trip this weekend...

I was driving on Friday Night, and my Tail Light LED went on. I got off at the next exit and checked the rear lights...all work (Brakes, running lights, Reverse, Turn sigs, etc). Restarted the car and got back on the interstate.

Then I noticed the LED comes on again. I figured that I already know the lights are working, so didn't really pay attention. Then after a while the Tail Light LED went off (?!?!). So, I figure I won't worry about it. About 45mins later the Tail light LED came on again (?!?!).

So on the trip the Tail Light LED went on and off three times at least, all the while the lights seem to work properly.

On the way back on Sunday, I'm driving down a dark two-lane road, touch the brakes to start to slow a bit, and immediately, my front headlights turn OFF.

Luckily, there was a shoulder, no one was coming. I stopped my car, "rebooted" (turned off ignition, started again), headlights didn't come on...rebooted again and headlights came on. Continued on my merry way, and no problems all the way home.

Any ideas?? I am sorta freaked out, b/c *luckily* there was shoulder space. I can't be driving around and have my lights turn off at any moment.

If your system voltage is OK while running, >13V, you may have a marginal headlight relay. If your voltage is low, it's possible for a relay to switch off when the voltage gets too low -- but I expect you would be seeing other symptoms as well. The taillight warning could be due to corrosion or mismatched bulbs in any of the exterior marker lights, front or rear. Bulbs need to be replaced in pairs -- if a right-side marker goes out, replace that bulb and the corresponding left-side marker with new bulbs. The bulb check circuit compares the total current draw of the left side markers and taillights with the current draw on the right side markers and taillights. Corrosion and/or mismatched bulbs can give false alarms.

Tail warning and headlights are most likely different issues. Headlights could be ignition switch or relay. Relay is a lot easier to swap out & check, so if the headlights were the *only* thing affected I'd try that first. If your radio, blower, turn signals, or other ignition-switch-related stuff misbehaves then the ign switch is more likely.
