Question Forward Shift Ball Socket Question

Hey guys,

How do you know when this is going bad and needs replaced? Currently, I have the engine out and bell housing off so I can easily get to this. What are some good troubleshooting tips, etc to see if mine is shot?

Currently, I can move the ball socket slighly up and down and side to side; without rotating it on the ball.

I appreciate the help.

Part# 928 424 005 01 Forward Shift Ball Socket

I assume you're talking about the shifter ball cup that sits on top of the torque tube. If you have play in it then by all means change it, especially if you can get to it easily. I'm not sure if it's different from the S4 design but you don't want that failing some day while driving. It'll make selecting a gear near impossible. The hardest thing was getting the locking nut loosened and the cup to set back over the ball...

Make sure when you do replace it that you count the number of threads showing or count the number of turns it takes to get it unscrewed. It's a real PITA if you don't get it back in exactly the right position once the engine is back in. Don't ask me how I know!

It is not neccesary to unscrew the ball cup holder at all - leave it alone. Just pull the nylon cup out of it and replace it with a new one for $1... it is the same nylon bushing that is used on the clutch release fork. Saves a LOT of time and trouble - and you will not have to adjust your shifter when you are done.

Also: it is advised to wire tie or hose clamp or something around the formward shifter rod and under the torque tube to prevent it from ever sliding up off the ball - which would leave you shiftless.... there is a thread on that somewheres...

Carl, AWESOME TIP about the bushing. If I may, is this the correct part # you are referring to?

From 928intl.com
"928 116 145 03 Ball Cup Bushing for Fork
very important for smooth clutch operation keeps clutch arm from rattling should be renewed when clutch is replaced "

Thanks,
B

Thanks for bringing this up. That's another thing on my list of WYAITs.

I had no idea the bushings are the same. Are you 100% and know this first hand? If yes, this is geat for anyone that has not yet changed their shifter cup bushing.
I didn't knwo this was possible, so just like everyone else I've replaced the entire cup assembly.

This is a great tip, but can you be more specific about the part please Carl? IIRC there are 2 or 3 shift fork cups for various year 928s...

I had been wondering about this - given the price if the replacement shifter cup.

I just checked PET and 928 116 145 03 is the only release lever insert listed. Along with the GTS style release lever and release bearing. - Wasn't there a Tech memo advising of the change to the later size of Ball Stud on the bell housing for the earlier cars.

Thats about $60 saved

Good one Carl

And Brad,
You better get with Carl, to see where he got that $1 bushing!

C'mon Carl, 'fess up with the correct part number? Brad and I are getting anxious about installing his engine, SITM is approaching.....

Sounds familiar, Jon... I guess they could be of different sizes, but if only one cup is available these days that pretty well narrows it down.
