Well, it has begun.
Since I've decided to not sell my 928, and I've got a little time on my hands, the repair work has started.
I've moved it to an out of the way spot in the back yard, and started pulling it apart. What I know is that the car starts like a charm, but stalls out at 3,000 rpm, but only under load. It stalls out to a lean condition. Testing of the fuel system brought up no intersting results. Also, there is a large oil leak of some sort on the frount end of the motor, that seems to be comeing from the oil seperator. I think something is the seperator has come lose, and is allowing a massive vacuum leak upstream of the throtal that causes a lean condition over 3,000 rpm under load killing the engine.
So, this is just a "wish me luck post." If anyone wants a picture of an 83 with stuff in peices, shout out for it.

Good Luck. I hate the OB oil seperator. I am replacing mine with this from DR. ---> https://www.928gt.com/pc-40363-4-pro...separator.aspx
search for 'provent' in the archives and there was a good thread about it.

Couse my wife still hates the car.
I can't figure that out. It's like she thinks the car is compotishion or something. Like it's another woman or something.
Any good ideas on how to appease her. She's OKed Mustangs, Covettes, Camaros, and other domestic "mussle". But has this thing aginst "foreign" cars. I don't get it.

Chances are that the ~1"x4" cork gasket between the oil fill cannister and block is only half there - and is your problem: sometimes, you can get away with tightening the bolt inside the cannister throat if the gasket is still intact. Also, the two hoses connected to the cannister turn to mush in the Texas heat .....
About your wife and foreign cars & things ... don't use a feminine name for the shark - call it Fritz vs Freda. If you ever pour her an ale, slip in a German one instead of a 'bud'. Zip across the state line someday for a truly foreign experience ... no, not that way - north to Oklahoma.
Got more tips if you need them.

-The oil separator on my 928 leaked when I bought it, and I always had oil down in the valley. When I took it apart, I discovered that the lower portion that screws into the block has an extruded metal pipe section that curves forward and attaches to a rubber hose leading to the oil pan. The point where the extruded metal met the cast portion had developed a leak; Marinetex epoxy took care of that very nicely.
You should clean the hell out of it and then look for the leak a day later. Could be the hose or the cork gasket too.
And the problem with the significant other can be solved at...of all places...the Ford dealer. Tell her that the Porsche is getting kind of expensive, and you want to go look at those new Mustangs. Let her see the prices on those things [upwards of $51,000 for some models-!], and suddenly your payment-free 928 will appear a whole lot friendlier to her.
b safe!

Heh, my wife is exactly the opposite. Every once in awhile I get into an odd mood where I decide I shouldn't have gotten the 928. I tell her, and she always convinces me I'm nuts. She seems to really like it and is glad I have it. Maybe she's just humoring me.
But she won't let me get a Mustang or even a Corvette. Those are cars for meatheads and rednecks, according to her. Unless it's like a '71 Corvette convertible, that would be ok with her. But she's very anti American cars, there are very few new american cars she has a positive remark for.
SOrry for the tangent. VU, haven't been following the original thread, but good luck sorting out the problem.

VU-
I always wondered why you had fallen off the face of the earth, since you had used your 928 as a daily driver and on the weekends to see your girlfriend. Now we find out you have gotten married!!!!
No wonder you were absent for a while.

I was pretty active on the Off Topic board.
I didn't have much to say about the 928 since I parked it and tried to sell it.
There is a MASSIVE oil leak from somewhere in the oil seperator. We're not talking quarts, but after running the car down the road for a few minutes, and then stoping, killing the engine, a good 12" puddle develops under the frount of the engine. It seems to come from the oil seperator.
Also, something seem to be causeing a very large vacuum leak at 3,000 rpm or so underload. The car goes lean, but the fuel system seems OK.
This happened about a week after the clutch on the a/c exploded, and the coolent reserve tank developed a big leak. Driveing through Texas in the summer w/o a/c SUCKS. And with a leak in the coolent reserve tank is down right dangerous. So I parked the car, promiseing myself I'd sell it and bought a Ford Ranger. I ended up with 2 or 3 diffrent potential buyers, but none came through with the cash, so I still have the car. Yeasterday, I had to move the car because the parking situation has changed. She fired right up, and made that lovely 928 with not much of a muffler sound. I fell in love all over again.
My finances have been improving, I'm about to graduate, and I've got a very good job lined up. So I pulled out the tool kit and started to pull the car apart.
My wife is strange. I'll get into that later.

Burning Brakes
The strange wives will never change. My first was jealous of practically any activity i undertook...eg, when i bought a new wood heater for the shop, she opined that i'd be spending all my spare time cutting wood and looking after the stove. My solution was to keep the toys and lose wife #1.

Well, I've succeded in getting the oil seperator off the car. I lost my 6mm hex key down into the big hole in the block the oil seperator covers doing it, but thankfuly it was recovered with a magent on a stick. (YEA!)
(Background: I have a large oil leak on the top frount of the motor, at the same time as what appears to be a vacuum leak before the throtal body but after the AFM. Over about 3,000 rpm w/ load the engine goes way lean and loses all power. The fuel system checked out las time I played with it. The oil leak appears to come from the oil seperator.)
There is the slightest play between the metal tube under the seperator and the aluminum part. I dought that it could have leaked nearly enough to cause the engine to lose all power above 3,000 rpm.
I'm checking the rubber hoses for leaks, but can't really find any. At least yet. I was horrified to find out how many of the vacuum hoses don't have hose clamps, or that their hose clamps are VERY lose. So lose that I could just pull the hoses off the metal w/o even trying.
One weird thing is that I was expecting cork gaskets. I think someone on the board told me to expect such. However, what I actualy have is a VERY hard plastic type gaskets. Is this right?
In anycase there is nothing saying "Hay look at me, I'm a HUGE oil leak!"
Lets see if I can get photos. Well, not yet on the photos. It appears that my photos are way too big. Suggestions?

If your photos are too big resize them with paint. just go to the picture in it's folder, right click, edit, now in paint click ctrl+w and enter a percentage like 25% for horiz and vert. Then save as picture-small.jpg and youre done.
now, be careful with the two m6 bolts for the oil seperator when reinstalling. they strip very easily. ask me how i know.
My seperator had a gasket that was a thin aluminum one with a baffle incorporated into it. '
good luck.
