All late model LSD manual cars I know of hop like kangaroos.

Hop is a function of torque, tire stick and suspension tuning. Autos don't typically develop the torque off the line required to hop. Slippery tires also avoid hop. With adequate torque to sticky tires, suspension tuning may need to be tweaked.

With sticky tires my 5-sp euro would hop at a moderate launch, but not with a really hot launch.

Your car and wheel hop would not be a good thing....man it would just ruin your burnouts!! :>)

I guess part of the question should be "stock 928's".

My Shark (Auto) with SC will bake the tires and I think the wheel spin is so fast, that if it did hop it would get airborne

Sproing. Sproing. Sproing.

All this vertical acceleration ain't doing my forward momentum no good.
Option 220 with 5 speed.
Be nice to have them modern electro-hydrodynamic self-adjusting shocks with
sensors for tuning out wheel-hop.

Ernest (NYC) Why are they all those dashed black lines on the road.

only my stock-suspension'd old '82 euro 5-speed would wheel hop. None of my 3 '85-86 5-speeds have ever hopped with Bilstiens or Koni's on them.

Maybe it's a Boge/5-speed thing?

Hi

In the UK we call "hopping" ...axle tramp ..or "tramping" ..when I was a crew chief in Top Fuel dragsters...some of the lower down classes had this problem..Fuellers handle it in a different way..

But the answer to axle tramp is obvious if you know what it is caused by...

It is caused by the rear axle trying to "WIND UP" under huge torque..so those cars use ....ANTI TRAMP BARS...which are a basically straight bar clamped to the underside of the rear axle by 2 huge U clamps...and at the front of the bars is a BIG solid rubber rounded off lump pointing upwards that as the axle twists hits the underside of the body and STOPS the twist... therfore...NO TRAMP....MORE GRIP ...AND MUCH FASTER LAUNCHES....OR....something breaks

Hope this helps ,

All the best Brett

85 5sp w/bilsteins- hops if you wind up and drop the clutch, no hop if you let cluctch out at 2500 and then nail it--

Good. If I get stickier tires I'll just have to increase the torque some more so it doesn't hop.

my prior '87 S4 LSD didn't hop, but I could only brake the wheels loose in a turn. After that it was a "smooth burn out..."
When I got the GT it was a nasty hop when it broke loose in 1st and second around 4k RPM. Once I added the supercharger it is mostly smooth. The wheel hop seems to occur only on un-even payvement. For some reason it just spins the wheels in 1st and second under full throttle without any hopping on a smooth road surface. It gets very expensive regarding rear wheels though experimenting with the wheel hop...

HI Brett,

Too bad there's no easy way to mod the rear sway bar mount
to accomodate an Anti-Tramp function.
Probably stepping too close to the torsion bar suspension system.

It's like the rear wheels go into resonance and just bounces like mad bunny rabbit. You step in the loud pedal. It ain't going so you
step on the right pedal harder. Then it finally registers in my little
brain cell that I'm doing the 928 Tramp.

Not to make this thread about me(gretch hates that), but you did ask:

I can launch my LSD 83 US A/T 928S at 2400rpm and get absolutely zero wheelhop(and very little wheelspin).

What i do get is what i can only describe as a viscious launch.

Of all the 1/4 mile cars i have ever owned none of them can touch the launch of my LSD equipped 83 A/T.

Has anyone S/Cd an A/T shark yet? I bet it would turn the best time of all of them at the strip(a 3.08 final drive 4 speed A/T would be an awesome beast).

If i want to do burnouts it will sit and spin them all day. I shot chunks of rubber on the hood of Lances 83 in a Parking lot at the Neshaminy mall one day when he asked me to do a burnout. LOL....it was friggin' awesome.

My GT hopped bad when stock and with original Boge shocks. Bilstein/eibach setup helped, but still had too much hop for a good launch.

With the SC, no more hop. Either it hooks or large amounts of clean wheelspin. A switch to 295/30/18's with SO2's improved traction, but still no hopping.

Easy way to get rid of wheelhop - just add boost!

Most boosted sharks are slushboxes.
