All I have ever seen are for turned down cranks where the diameter of the main journal is less than stock but never anything for oversized align bored where you would need an oversized bearing out side diameter. As far as doing it in the car ... that would be absolutely nuts in my opinion considering that you have to remove the timing belt disconnect the flywheel/ driveshaft remove the engine cradle steering rack a/c compressor and mount then suspend the engine from above. Ask anyone who has changed the engine mounts and oil pan gasket how much fun that was then add in the additional complications and the crank is HEAVY. It is so much easier to pull the engine and do it upside down on a engine stand. Pulling an engine is really not that big a deal.

I can't imagine doing that work from underneath, but i have done my work on ramps in the driveway. As far as removing an engine in an afternoon, it took me many days for the first time.

Of course i didn't have to come post about busting any threads or bolts. Plus i let certain things soak for quite a while in liquid wrench. It took me a day just to get those damn bosch retaining clips off the injectors. They kept slipping and i kept swearing.

I have two euro motors that i have looked inside and the machining can make you nervous at first. If it were my engine, i would pull it and do everything that might need doing, gaskets etc....

tv: I did one with Rich S. It was an early car. He had things somewhat disassembled and the hood off when I got there. Having a second set of hands and eyes saves many hours of time during the lifting/checking clearances/coaxing things around other things process. Same for dropping the engine back in and getting things locked back down. I wouldn't do it alone. Too many things you can't see alone that you can get hung up on. So, I'm not surprised it took you many days.

Henrich,
The women I met from West Kentucky (while I was at grad school at Univ. of KY) had toenails about an inch long. Great women though and it didn't interfere with their driving. Also could put a new twist on the term "Thrust Bearing Failure." The ones I knew could empty a fruit jar in no time...that's where the term "hog nosed" comes from. I'm from Tennessee so I know about these things. There are even a few 928's in Tennessee now but none were featured in that old classic movie, "Thunder Road."

Brent, we're all hoping get your engine sorted out reasonably. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Brent,

If you attempt to repair your car w/o pulling the engine, you'll be wanting to empty a fruit jars too. Not a good idea.

Brent,

I wouldn't suggest doing that underneath the car. Taking everything apart is not so bad, but the crank shaft is one HEAVY ****... you dont want to accidently drop it, or have it pull down on a connecting rod somehow and damage a cylinder... Not to mention when re-assembling it, mating the cradle to the block is a delicate and precise operation. I'd say very difficult to do underneath. You really want the engine on a stand and turn it upside down to do all this, IMHO.

Best of luck.
