Will:

Scissor lifts obstruct the underside too much unless they are unusual with the hydaulics moved out to the sides and using two widely spaced rails. The HF two-post requires more than 8 feet clearance. There are other two-post lifts that don't (no top rail - use a floor pad instead). Two of those frame lifts look like a portable substitute for a two-post lift, but the maximum height (36" pads on frame) seems limited even considering an 8 foot ceiling. You really want to be able to sit under the car and not be on your back. In fact, it looks like the lowest height for the pads is TOO high (11") to get under most 928s.

Hi Bill,
The underside obstruction issue is one of the reasons I haven't bought a scissors, but there are a couple of guys on the email list who have and are happy. The second scissors lift has a 3 7/8" minimum. You're right those frame lifts wouldn't work. doh!

The "hanging frame" that would be necessary for an I-beam hoist solution is also off-putting. So my options are limited. In an ideal world I'd want at least two assymetric two-post lifts, a 6' higher ceiling and another 4000 square feet with a/c, plumbed for air, water and gas. ;-)

Get the caster kit, park the car on it, turn it sideways, and park the other car with the nose under the lift. Might be possible if your garage is big enough.

scissor lifts are great for 911's, but not for 928's, I've tried.

BTW: The standard for commercial concrete applications is a 4" slab with 3000psi concrete, reinforced. if your garage is not reinforced, there could be issues even with the proper concrete. I need to check my photos on that from when our house was built.

SW's floor: colored commercial epoxy, professionally installed: dark blue 2' square, offset by clear 2' square, blood red border. Gorgeous!

Mark.

Trust me, I'm playing with every possible combination. Problem is, the only way I can see this working is by taking down my work bench. So that would leave me with a great way to get under the car, with no place to work on anything I take off the car.

I need a bigger garage, but I do not want a bigger house. Few quotes that came in put a 3rd stall at about $10,000. Not sure I want to invest that much into this place.

I pay $112 per month for two 10x20 storage units for the 928's. With a 3rd stall and a lift, I can keep both of them at home. 89 months later I will break even on the 3rd stall vs storage fees

As I think back, someone on another 928 site, 928 OC, I think, posted something about a fork lift type car jack system. That is, it had a side lift and and two extension arms - kind of a good idea but rather pricy 3 K+/-. Haven't seen any since, a year or two ago.

I have a 2 post lift from Complete hydraulics that I bought a year ago. was 2200 delivered to Michigan from Indiana. Full 10,000 pound lift. Had my F150 supercab on it a few times as well.

see here

http://http://www.completehydraulic.com/

I have 116" ceilings and lost the use of one bay sort of (could still fit another 928 beside it but would be tight).

A two post list with the cables running underneath could be inserted through the ceiling between the joists.

Love mine. Removed a transmission once on my back and will never do that again.

Rod-
Didn't know you had a lift. Looks like we'll have to have a Michigan to Windsor 928 party at your house! Mabe a good way for us to get our spring cleaning/maintenance done. Don't worry though, we'll bing the beer!

That is the other problem. If I add a 3rd or even 2 more stalls (the most likely choice given the layout of my lot) the first thing I would do is order a Factory Five Cobra kit and fill the new spaces leaving me with the same amount of room as I started. Granted, once the Cobra is finished I will be better off....so many projects, so little time & money.

You are right. I should have added that the scissor lift is great for most tasks and probably the lowest priced way to get 3 feet off the ground quickly and safely. Dan Brindle has been very happy with his for years and he has worked on more 928s than anyone else I know.

Rod:

Now that you mention it, that's another thing favoring a 2-poster vs. 4. With a 4-poster ramp style, you cannot drop the suspension and tranny on the lift. If you have the lateral room for the extra width of a 2-poster, it is the way to go.

Hacker:

You should get a good share of that $10K for the 3rd stall back as as a home improvement. Maybe not as much as adding a bathroom, but done right, it should have decent return. So, look at it as an investment! A damn good place to put your money, if you ask me.
