What are the advantages or disadvantages of powdercoating rims instead of painting them?
How would scratches be filled before the powdercoating process?
Is powdercoating resistant against brake cleaner?
What's the difference in cost?

Powdercoating, if done right, should be a lot tougher than paint.
Scratches would be filled with a powdercoat-compatible filler.![Stick Out Tongue](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Powdercoating ought to be better at resisting brake cleaner than paint... but may I ask why you would want to spray brake cleaner on the wheels?![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
I'd say try to find someone local who has had experience with a local shop, and go from there.

powder coating is in general stronger than paint. Costs more but will last longer and is resistant to almost all retail chemicals. It is how almost all the wheels are painted today.

They could fill those tiny scratches you have before they powder coated them! Plus you could get just about any color you wanted.....but you'd have to put your old wheels/tires on while the 17's were getting fixed up!

If the scratched are small, they probably won't even have to be filled in. I had some engine parts coated recently. Alot of the casted aluminum came out smooth as silk. If you have some curb rash that is fairly rough, then some work will definitely have to be done to make them look perfect.

Powder coating is much better stronger harder ...and not much more than having them professionally painted. Now a couple cans of Krylon is another story

Nicole,
I've got four Cup IIs out getting prep'ed for powdercoating right now; white centers with a black chrome rim is costing $300. Single color was quoted to at $200, but both include clearcoating. Another shop is media blasting the factory finish off: $20/wheel.

The only reason to paint, is if you are trying to match the wheel centers to body color. If you are going for black, silver, etc, powdercoating is the way to go. It's just like paint, but much more resistant to scratches, dirt, solvents, etc... Any brake cleaner strong enough to damage powdercoating will totally blister paint...

I decided a little while ago that I'm going to , if I can find the perfect color. I kinda like the white that mine are painted now, but the wife hates it. She wants something bronze/brown to complement the car color. We'll see.
