Default why do I have to play with the #42 fuse to start the car

Wierd.

For the second time this winter it has gotten very cold and that equals to a No Start!
I do believe I have a leaky #1 fuel injector that is possibly giving me the problem.

After the temperature falls below approximately -18 degrees celsius the car without a block heater but with a battery warmer will crank fast enough.
I can smell fuel after turning without start.
The ONLY way I can start the vehicle is in the timing of the # 42 fuse which controls the fuel pump. While turning the key with my left hand I must cycle the fuse-in and out with my right- at certain times until it starts to fire. It is very important to cycle the on/off of the fuel pump properly for an engine start!

I believe the Engine is flooding.
What is your take.

I'd start with a cleaning of the female contacts in the fuse block - and insert a fresh fuse: if the engine runs smoothly on all 8 when warm, I can't see a leaking injector hindering start up.
You shouldn't be seen playing with your fuse in public ....

Hey Mike............longtime no speak.

What made you pull the fuse in the first place? Starting @ -18C without a block heater may the issue right there.............can you get one installed?

How does it start when its not as cold/warm?

I have an ongoing problem with the vehicle. After startup and run and shut off, restart time is proportional to sitting time.

For instance.
- Shutting down for 5 minutes after a run = an easy start.
- Shutdown and starting after 15minutes = turning the engine for approx. 7 seconds before fire up.
-Shutdown and starting up after 20+ minutes takes a cranking of at least 12 seconds.

-Shutdown and almost immediate startup = attempt-no go. Have to wait a bit!

There is always a fuel smell.

I've always felt that the car floods itself on cold, albeit slower starter days.
This is why I need to cycle the fuse. The reek of fuel lessens without the fuse and the engine starts to buck every few revolutions until it becomes more frequent and then I must insert the fuse to add more fuel and the engine begins to start and then slowly bog. Then I remove the fuse and it starts to fire up more frequently until I get the mixture right(manually) and once it starts I finally insert the fuse and the electronics then help themselves.
I'M NOT KIDDING!

OK Mike...............you've a serious issue here that requires immediate fixing before you end up with a fire ball. Fuel dampners, fuel pressure regulator and/or the injectors..........check them all out............quick.

I've got to agree with Malcolm about this one. Get the fuel pressure, and fuel system checked out quickly! I also would NOT like to hear of another fireball. And, WYIT, not knowing how long it's been since the rubber lines have been checked, I'd certainly check those over very hard!
When I got into Rosy's problem, I was told about this, from poor Shane? That was the fireball that spooked me into looking closely, and I'm glad I did, 'cause I found one line cracked, and another I suspected of swelling. Replaced 'em all!
In the end, the real whole problem, apparently, was the FPR.

I'll throw in a third vote for "you're playing with fire".

Besides, with or without Garth's imagery, that's got to be quite a sight, watching you try to start that beast...

Are you haveing difficulty in turning the car over, or just not catching? If the former, when was the last time you checked your flex plate?

Other possibilites - I believe the engine needs to be turning at 50RPMs before it will activate spark - which should take care of fuel, but I'm not sure on that part. Having grown up in Minneapolis myself, I know those cold morning starts can be awfuly slow the first few revs.

If no problems getting the car to turn over, then I defer to my fellow sharks on this one.
