Thanks for the clarification - and thanks to everyone for some good information! I thought this was going to be a very biased bash-on-bmw discussion, but I feel the information here is very factual. I will be putting the $6K I saved up towards my first 928 track/street car. (preferably '87+, silver, no side-mouldings, and 5spd )

I think the main thing about Dean's car is that its already modified. I'm one of those guys who takes a gret deal of pride in his own work and accomplishments (as i'm sure Dean is too), but when I pass up some E36 M3s on the track (shh, don't tell anyone I said that), I want to be able to say "Yes, I am the driver AND the mechanic".

You better be careful there Louie... I was VERY close to buying a brand new STI mainly because financing would be 10x easier than an older 928. In the end, I concluded that it wasn't what I REALLY wanted, and a 928 is a much cooler/rarer/faster/better/etc car.
Since track cars are hardly ever "done", I'm sure there would be a lot of changes to Dean's car you could call your own.

At the Spokane track last year it was a humbling experience to to trying as hard as I could in my mostly stock S4 to have to point by a Subie with 4 people aboard. I can't remember the model, but it looked like a phone booth on wheels.

Damn! That's going to be fun!

It will be a little fun, and a bit of a challenge, to get your 928 out there, and start showing your BMW friend what it can do...

But it really will be a hell of a lot cheaper to make it trackable...

Scott Chan's time is listed at 1:439. You probably checked the practice time, not the qualifying time.

HP allows a small amount if lightening. Per the rules 3048# is allowed, stock is 3175#

yes, your right. didnt scroll down. actually, he ran a 1:43.4 or something!

HP i know pretty well. my good buddy Freddy ran this class. the cars that do well are the M3 lightweights. (kind of pricey to begin with.) their weights may be with driver, its been a long time since ive looked at the rules.

this is a time that is pretty fast, however, that day was supposed to be just perfect condition wise. (several of my friends were racing that day)

HP is totaly gutted cars. like i said, you need to keep the front and rear windows glass. slight mods to the fenders, and the engine can have more mods than i have on my car. headers, cams, chips, camber plates and suspension mods, all ok. HP to the wheels is easily 230rwhp. you can see that a stock 928 with out the mods can be right there with a lot less fuss. Like i said, ive raced these guys in the NASA chariot races, bmw/porsche challenge, and recently in the ITE SCCA events.
If you did what is allowed for HP with a BMW, on a 928, you would have my car and a car 3 seconds faster!

stan,
I think you missed the weight for HP (H prepared) for a BMW M3
You quote 3048lbs , thats for a standard M3, not a lightweight. that would be for the I class. " H " is for the M3 lightweight and has a weight of 2832 lbs Per the rules!!! thats with driver my friend!!!!, thats 2632 without driver and and 2550 without gas (i think gas too, as it comes off the track)

so, if you read the rules, it is almost identical what ive done to my 928. except, i have stock cams and the M3 can go custom. any wheel that fits without rubbing too, as long as its DOT.

928 has the HP version of the BMW M3 by over 3 seconds!
