you're slipping Randy, his MY is in his screen name, also, many remove the front seat to get access to remove the pod, which is necessary to remove the cluster and hence replace the gear....

Paul and Randy:

Thanks for the suggestions. I have ordered a US version odometer gear from Rennbay. I had heard it suggested that the front seat should come out to provide enough room to lay down and remove the screws/bolts under the steering column. Maybe that guy was just looking for a place to nap halfway...

The pod removal is described at http://www.nichols.nu/tip172.htm. Thus, I think I'm on course now.

Peace,
Tim

Question Odometer myth?

Referring to this link, they say this:
"Another myth is your gear breaks when you hit the reset while moving. Your
gear broke because oil was put oil on the original rubber gear. The heat from
the sun, over time, disolved your gear."
Does anyone have any direct info supporting the theory that resetting while moving harms THE GEAR?

Hey Guys-
I caught this thread a little late, but thought some of you might still be watching. Has anyone had a problem with the smaller teeth on the gear wearing down, instead of the larger teeth that are in contact with the worm gear? that seems to be my problem. Replacement is still the answer, just wondering why this happened instead of the big teeth breaking off like in the other pictures.

The OEM gears just deteriorate over time. Sometimes the small section shows wear first and sometimes its the larger part. Once it starts though, it will get worse real quick. Its a property of the material more than anything you do to it.

The new ones we make are of the same material as the rest of the gears in the unit. If you pull the gauge apart you will see they have not worn or started to brake down in any way. That's one of the reasons ours come with a life time warranty. So go ahead and hit your trip while your moving. If you can brake them, we will replace them. (hasn't happened yet)
