Odometer is broken
Hi Folks:
This is my first post, so please be sure to send along any prerequisite hazing in your replies. I am a complete no-knuthing about automotive workings and have been both excited and daunted by a hand-me-down 928S from father in law. People on the PelicanParts BBS have been very kind and I have begun making improvements to the car. I have graduated to rennlist, having been told that it's the best BBS.
One key problem with the car is the broken odometer. She reads 122K and has for years now. My father in law indicates that the, um, "TB", was replaced a few years ago. Seems like I oughta look into getting a new odometer so as to keep track of when I should have the timing belt looked at again.
The speedometer and tachometer work fine. When I asked the local Porsche dealer (does anyone else get a creepy feeling of financial molestation from their dealer...?!!?) they indicated that odometers were scarce and that replacement would cost 2-3K. That made me want to buy a pedometer at SportMart and simply hang it from the rearview mirror.
Any suggestions?
Thanks. Looking forward to future conversations..

Either way you're going to have to take the pod apart. But don't worry - even I managed to do it without screwing anything up. And if I can do it, anyone can. Just remember when you're taking things apart to label everything, especially if it's your first time.
Once you get the odometer out it will be obvious if it just needs a new gear.

By coincidence I just finished replacing the odometer gear on mine today.
Before I say anything I must thank every person who has ever offered advice or done a write-up on pod removal or cluster maintenance. I think I read them all before I ventured in.
My hindsight offering would be to make sure you record the needle position before removing any needle - I forgot this step on the first couple and wasted a good amount of time tweaking afterwards because of it.
For removing needles I placed a tissue on the face of the gauge and lever'd a fork under the needle to lift it up. A couple were very tight and a gentle CCW twist got them off. Every needle is different and a couple of times I thought I'd break one but got lucky.
Not only has the odometer been fixed, the good clean up also fixed the pegged oil pressure gauge, lazy volmeter and the hesitant speedo. Very worthwhile.
Cheers,
Terry

Find an independent wrench that "KNOWS" 928's!
Better still - get copies of the WSM, bookmark the sites of the Big 3 (or 4 or 5 or whatever it is this week), Pirtle, Jorj, Nichols, et al (see the Newbie FAQ's at the top of this forum)and do MOST ALL of the work yourself!
There are a number of good R'listers in the Chi-town area that can give you a hand, too!

What a coincidence. I inherited a '78 from my father in law with a broken odometer gear. Just finished replacing it and all the above advice is good. Getting the needle off was my biggest problem. I ended up bending it and flaking off some of the paint. There is an excellent step by step instruction available (do a search) with pictures. The only other piece of advice I would give is to remove the drivers seat and spread out a heavy quilt and pillow. Makes the work easier.

I am going to try to remove the pod and see if the gear is truly shot. My sense is that I will need to remove the driver's seat as well. I've tried contacting KLA, but have not heard anything back. I'll try Odometer Gears LTD once I confirm that the gear is bad.
Thanks to everyone who chipped in with suggestions. Now all that's left is to do the actual work...
Peace,
Tim

Tim - Here is what my broken gear looked like. The original gear basically turns into goop. I bought my gear through Rennbay.com. No issues in 2 years.
Broken gear....
Replacement gear.....
Since I have a Euro speedo they ended up sending me 2 different gears as they weren't sure which gear was in my speedo. Lucily one of them was correct so I simply mailed the other one back. It's not too difficult a job. Let us know if you have questions and we will help as best we can. Good Luck!
