looking at a 928 at the junkyard/price advice
Hey, just wanted to find out how much a 78 928 5 speed motor and trans are worth with 100K miles on them??
Thanks for your time, and i did try search.
I might be able to pick up a 928 and try to get it running, if not i'll part it.
Vlad.

Haulage fee(hahaha). If you're refurbing an OB, I'm all for it, but the price of that unit, as untested is pretty low. If it were a new rebuild, it would have some value. I don't know what core is, but I wouldn't pay much over it.

I have a pile of non-running old 928 engines which if you wish to pick one up it could be yours for much less than $600. For a good guaranteed for one year engine from a business that will be around a year from now ,takes credit cards ,and actually ships what they promise an early engine is "worth" more like $1,500. The transmission is at best only a core since you cannot drive it to test.

does this car currently have an engine? if not why? early cores are cheap as Jim notes, but rebuilding it can cost you more than the one he's offering at $1500
also, is this a euro or us spec car, early 78 or later 78 (there can be differences)

Rixter I think he means it has an engine but does not run and if he can not get it to run he intends to make money limit his loss by selling off the parts if he does go buy it (pick it up) in the first place..

i didn't get the VIN yet, like someone previously mentioned the car is not running and the car is vandlized and interior is GONE. It's at the junk yard.
Kinda felt sorry to see it there, they said that they were not able to get it running. All panels are pretty straight though, paint is chipping just wanted to tinker with it and if i can't get it to run i didn't want to loose out either.
Hence the post. I'll get some pics, if the guy comes down in price i'll ****** it up because it got 16 in phone dials that i can use for my S2
Thanks for the input

It makes little difference wheather it runs or not the remains are not worth trying to restore it would cost $25,000 or so to make it into a $10,000 car. Hello, the prior owner gave up because in his opinion it was not worth fixing !

Who said that i'm looking to restore it?? I just want to see if i can make it run, check the compression and see if it's driveable. I don't really care about no interior, i got a sparco bucket seat that will take care of that. The car was vandalized, that's how it ended up at the junker, and by overall condition and insp.. sticker looks like someone was taking good care of it in previous life. New exhaust system, not asingle rust spot, no rust on any susp. components and it's a 5 speed which is a bit rare.
And i'm not trying to solicit "parts car" customers here, i just need some insight on the prices so i don't loose out on it either if it won't run. That thing is going to be a 2 by 2 cube of compressed metal in a few weeks, don't really wanna see that.
VIN is 9288200426

car is non sun roof.
Has 16 inch phone dials, guy said the title was clear.
I'm still not 100% sure about what i'll do but if i pass i'll get you all the info and pics.
Final decision is gonna be from my better half, i just know she's going to be all excited about another car that's older than her sitting in the back yard until i give up on it and take 2 years to get rid of it

Vlad,
even if you don't do a resto, an early 928 (or any 928 for that matter) that's been sitting can put you in the poorhouse quick and still just be sitting around
I've spent the last 2 yrs restoring an early car that's not in as bad a shape as that and I can tell you honestly that I'll have more in it when done than what it would have cost brand new
bear in mind, I pretty much knew this going in and I have NO REGRETS, but that's me, I'm a glutton for punishment and truly love the early cars, especially low vin# 78s
this is not something you're going to be able to put in a couple hours here and there and all of a sudden have a streetable car, I may be wrong but I've seen enough of these to be a pretty good judge of what it takes to revive one
best of luck to you either way, if it's not for you please let me know, depending upon price I can give it a real good home

forgive me for blurting this out without search, what are the most common items that go bad on these cars and cause them to run poorly?
I'm a 944 guy and know a bit about engines, not the CIS fueled units though.
I don't care about paint, exterior condition of the car if i do get it running, i just want to try and see if it'll run. i'm 90% sure i'll fail to make it run but i just want to try the other 10% . Either way, hoprfully it'll be saved from being compressed in a square.
I'm heading back to the junk yard on friday to check if the T-belt is torn and i'll snap a few pics.
And i want those 16 inch phone dials that are on there....
