Springtime...when a young man's mind turns to burried automotive treasures....
[someone said that to me a few years ago- sorry!]
Well, I also found a good used '79 up to her axles in the mud in Bithlo, Florida a few years ago. I managed to pull a perfect un-molested and uncracked pod from this car after fighting off the resident 3 foot-long rattlesnake with a rather wieldy section of Volvo side trim. I never tried to find out the value of the shell, which was crushed a few months later to my chagrin- I made the guy in charge of the shop write my name down, and instructed him to call me before they made it flat. It's obvious he wasn't very good at following directions, not that I ever expected him to care anyway!
I've learned that junk 928's are worth what you can pull off of them at the moment you find the wreck. You'll not find any gems later down the road; wrecked cars are open to the elements and are only kept around for a few months before they are crushed. When you find a junkyard dog 928- pull what you can then leave....and forget.

looks damn straight, would be a shame to lose such a nice clean, straight looking car....
for the money, it doesn't look too too bad - you can get a running engine rebuild with a warranty for $1500 - so for less than $5,000 you could have a great classic 928

the guy who sells the cars will be back there on tuesday, i'll stop by and maybe he'll come down in price because the engine is toast but it's not an awesome deal in my eyes even if it'll be $500. The interior is completely ruined...

It is a hardtop car and a 5 speed.
Interior is already gutted, and since you gotta swap the motor out anyway, you can put anything you want in there.
Perfect track car candidate.

Go for it!
This is the problem I faced with my car...cracked block and milkshake in the oil...
People here are extremely helpfull, so you won't have problems finding parts... Contact 928Intl or Rixter(haven't dealt with other retailers but can assure you of these ones) If the car was running when that happened then rebuilt is a must. However, it could be just a headgasket, which you could fix yourself with around 600$ and time on your hands. (included is the WP job and resurfacing of the heads) There is engine flush procedure in WSM after oil/coolant mix up. I would do some research. Is there a coolant on the outside? Pressure test the coolant system and see where you get the leak from.
From time to time there are engines on EBay for under 1000$ which could be a deal if you know what you are doing.
Don;t give up on it yet!
Cheers,
Klim

OK, here's my final decision.
I'm going back to the yard on Tues. morning and offering him $500 and if he doesn't take it i'm walking. OK, 700 tops. If i do get the car i'm parking it behind my rescue squad till the end of May all covered up. I'm in school full time and this semester i got about 20 credits. I work in the summer but i will have a lot of time in my hands as my lady is going away to study for 2 month.
Sooo.. in the first days of summer i will completely acess the car and see if i can TRY to rebuild the engine with help from the forum and a few locals. Or i can see if i can get a good used engine without braking the bank. Interior is not a problem with me, i'll rip out what is left from the insulation, send it down, spray with rust bullet, lightweight carpet, two bucket seats and we're good.
The hardest part with me and projects is trying to GET GOING, once i'm in it i can be pretty efficient with my time.
If i decide to give up on the car at least i'm not going to loose money, well, at least i hope so.
If he still wants a $1000 for it i dunno.... will see..
So anyway, hopefully we can save this one, even if i'll give up on it, at least i can save it for a few month and find someone who has the means....
yay for a 928 adoption...
Vlad.
